Lazy WP
I’m not much of a fan of them. Makes my truck think it’s a Montfort or some such thing. You either have little old ladies who drive like they are qualifying for an Indy road race, or a company driver who’s out to win his second safety award by not exceeding the speed limits. All that aside, there are some really beautiful red tractors along US 71. Some nicely painted smaller ones in Braddyville. A somewhat unique setup near Villisca? I think it was a 706 with a trip bucket loader? Won’t swear to the number but it looked WAY more tractor than loader.

When I was still chasing the girl who became my wife, it seemed like every single Friday night when I went her way on highways 75 and 18 there would be one person who could only manage 53-54 mph, and there was almost invariably too much traffic to pass. F-301066460puller
I'm one of those company drivers.... You ever been one? It's not about safety rewards It's about keeping your job. Safety awards mean NOTHING the company screws you out of them anyway. My company pays JUST enough to put up with the b.s. Keep judging...
IH Forever
It is irritating, especially in hilly areas where you can’t pass. I just got back from driving a lot of miles in IA, NE, KS, and CO on I80, I70, and I76. I would say that even more annoying is getting behind fleet trucks having a semi race at 67 - 69 mph.
Alan Dinan
Highway 61 from Poplar Bluff, Mo to Pocahontas, AR. 60mph limit and someone is always pulling a big trailer behind a Ford Ranger or a Chevy s-10 driving 45. Generally enough traffic to be stuck. But about halfway through there is a 56, can’t tell if it’s a 12 or 14 sitting at a small shop. Was going to stop and leave a note on it, asking if it was for sale, but the last time through there it was hooked up to a dual wheeled cherry picker. Nope, never been one. I’m too much of a rebel to be micro managed. I really wasn’t trying to go fast across there, but riding the brakes down a hill to stay below 54, just didn’t seem smart.
Lazy WP
I get the safety concerns about the farm equipment on 2 lane roads. The highway in front of my house is 55, and I fight to keep it that way. Way to hilly and narrow for much more. If I ever get a speeding ticket it will be close to the house. By the end of the week I am ready to be home and 55 just seems like a snails pace after running 75 down the interstate. Iowa, on the other hand, has BEAUTIFUL, wide open roads with great shoulders…
F-301066460puller
I'm governed at 70 mph and GPS and camera tracked to stay at posted speed limits. It wasn't always like this but things changed. I know it's not safe I see several people a day try to commit suicide to get by me. What's worse is I have to make sure I'm not following too close and if my camera gets triggered and I'm too close I could eventually get fired. 4 seconds.... Some educated idiot who's never been in a truck sets these rules not the drivers. Just remember those guys have a job to do as well and just want to get home safely to their families.. A little patience goes a long way.

DT Fan
Highway 14 between Laurel and Mashalltown can be a real bear. So many hills, curves, and oncoming traffic it's almost impossible to pass. Add in the folks that wont pass, don't miss driving that road going to work!
Dzldenny
I'm a two lane guy all day everyday. Posted limits for me. Cruise control even on a two mile drive. There is nowhere I need to be that badly. Plus, 55mph is 24 mpg. 72mph is 15mpg. Must be a rpm fuel map thing on my truck. I don't drive for a living but even 77 in a 70 is standing still. If you do 80, they have to do 90. I'm also a right lane drive left lane pass guy. Pretty sure that's law of the land even if it's not enforced. Just pulled a 30ft g-neck 1200 miles and averaged 17.7mpg on mostly 55mph two lanes. The few stretches on the multi lanes at 70mph it dropped to 14's. Added two hours to my trip. I also haven't had a wreck or ticket in 33 years driving. Biggest pet peeve is 72 to pass me then 47 in front of me while you post to your socials while driving about how you just had to deal with some slowpoke jerk on the road. If you are driving for a living, I will always give you extra room and a flash when you are clear after passing.

A little patience goes a long way. We’re set at 68, of course I’m hourly so as long as I stay in the “on time” network they don’t complain. Our trucks have adaptive cruise, collision avoidance, right side blind spot detection and lane centering alarms. We’re instructed and have a yearly ride along by a supervisor they trained who’s the same age as my oldest going to critique us even though I’ve been doing it 38 years, legally! Just spent 5 hours watching videos and doing tests that they give us the answers to to be in compliance for the year at $67/hr. Insurance companies are the ones pushing all the safety issues. We are preached at to always protect the “shield” that is on the truck and trailer.

We’ve been told not to flash as it puts the liability on us granted we’re on interstates mostly so no real reason to flash as the passer has the whole left lane ahead of him to clear us. If you have a CDL, can pass a drug test, and show up on time, you can get hired anywhere!!!! Getting fired might be a blessing to be out of that situation. Local end dump guy here's told me if I get sick of RR, he'll hire me, 100K. No weekends, home every night.
F-301066460puller
They know that, that's why they pay just enough plus decent insurance and 401k. There is not many stable places to go that don't have all that b.s. anymore. But yes you're right, big reason I got into trucking. I should add I don't work for a trucking company I work for a company that has trucks... lol delivering all kinds of metal ltl style. I just can’t imagine having all of that garbage. They may as well just hire 1 gamer for 2 of you guys and let them drive it remotely. Have a neighbor who was an owner operator until E-logs. Sold his truck and went to work for Walgreens? He had all the safety equipment and grumbled to himself, that he was going to shove his truck up someone’s backside. He got a serious reprimand out of the deal and told them THEY could stick their truck up their own behind. I struggled for years about even putting a dashcam in my truck. I run hard when I work. See some absolutely beautiful country. Meet some amazing people and make good money doing it. If I have to run the same area more than about a week, I get bored and start doing stupid stuff. I know my style of trucking isn’t for everyone and I also know that YOUR style of trucking would make me into an alcoholic.
F-301066460puller
Why did he give up being an owner op because of elogs? How many trucks did he run? If you had a pre '99? ENGINE I didn't think you needed elogs? I've never been otr and never wanted to be, especially as a company driver. Owner Op it may be ok but I always thought it was kinda a lie about seeing the country. Sure you get to see a lot of places but it's at 70 mph. Pretty much only get 2hrs a day on your own time. He was coast to coast. Newer truck. Used to running way more hours than he could log. I have a ‘99 motor, use ag exemption whenever possible, and try really hard not to get east of the Mississippi. Used to figure I needed a $1000/day, now if the truck isn’t above $2000/day, I complain to my dispatcher. Again I know it’s not for everyone, but I also know that if I am going to own my own truck, I can’t afford to stay close to home, nor sleep at the house every night. IHandJDman
My son and I took US 36 across Iowa this year on our way to Grand Island. I had never been in Iowa south of I80, just around the Boone and Waterloo areas.. It was a pretty drive and does have the 3rd lane on the hills to get over. tractorholic
I am sure most of the population don’t think about the dedication truckers have. I know sometimes I will see two or three pot loads of cattle wheel into a truckstop to fuel in the middle of the night and roll on out meanwhile people are sleeping at home and think the meat comes from the store. Sounds simple don’t it. They don’t thank me when I’m up in the middle of the night to get a cold newborn calf in to warm it up either. It’s humbling to see truckers have the same sort of dedication
