Boiled linseed oil diluted 1:1 with turpentine works good.  Two heavy coats with some drying between the two coats and rolled on with a used paint roller is my choice.

My Dad and Grandpa always painted their barns with 50% red barn paint and 50% boiled linseed oil.  Having said that, they always applied a coat of used motor oil to the manure spreaders and silage wagons before they were parked for the year. I haven’t heard of using turpentine.  I’m guessing that it acts as a wood preservative?

I use high quality deck stain (clear).   Never have liked having oil on the deck to stain clothes and get slick when wet.....but can't deny it works well.
