And it's all wrong but all intentional. They subsidize in order to control. Hobble economic liberty with artificial stricture and then blame it for failing so you can hobble some more. Homey don't play that.

How long can Ford carry the loss of around 100K on each EV they sell or 4.5 Billion a year?

They will need to sell a lot of ICE stuff to make up that loss

I prefer this version....at the Farm Progress Show today.   130 engine hp, 16 speed power shift. Diesel powered!

Can't very long. The advent of destructive CAFE standards forced them to sell the sh!tbox subcompact cars at a loss to inflate the average economy number so they could make money on the rest of the product line. The overall net result of that rule makes the pickups and regular cars more expensive while the cheap and more dangerous pregnant roller skates are given away to those less able to afford better transportation.

Government distortion of the market on parade.

The Solectrac has a 350 kWh battery pack. That’s equal to about 8.5 gallons of diesel. Multiply that by 30% efficiency of a diesel ICE and that gives you about 2.5 gallons of fuel. A small tractor like that burns about a gallon per hour when working so I think that was fairly accurate and not really surprising.
Here’s the pull test

From watching some Solectrac videos, I believe a Farmall M may be more advanced and user friendly. It’s a step below transmission drive pto, since even they would function in reverse. The three speeds are; too slow, too fast, and transport. I also visited the webpage where they make it very clear that the government in some states will pay you to buy it. I don’t know what you call it, but that is not a tractor.

Here is comparison

He talks about engine life on the diesel at 10K hours and on the electric at 80k Hours

What fails to talk about is the battery life on the electric which will be less than the diesels engine life

Under 2 hours of run time?  California will give you about $16000 towards the roughly $30000 purchase price?  How could any business even consider this machine? 12 to 13 pto horsepower.  Zero resale.  It is a toy at best.  A compact kubota would be 100x better in every way.  Compacts do have commercial applications in which they fit, just not this one.  It is an electric lawn mower.  The website claims livestock applications.  I can't think of many.

Solectrac had a booth at the NFMS in Louisville this year with a couple tractors on display. They are very crude.
I think the PTO a still works while tractor is in reverse.
I would consider Tractor Tim an acquaintance. I run into him occasionally. We’ve talked about the Solectrac a little bit and his impressions of it. They’re more of a technology company trying to learn how to build a tractor. CaseIH or Deere can build a tractor but don’t have the experience with the battery and electric drive.
Not comparing Solectrac to Tesla but similar situation. Tesla figured out the electric drive and charging infrastructure but didn’t know how to build cars in volume like Toyota or Ford. They’ve learned over the years and improved and now have the best selling “not-a-truck” vehicle in the USA in 2023.

I doubt we see Solectrac become the next Tesla. But I could see them being bought by one of the tractor companies.

Yeah..... I don't do face people. Made it through 13:26 in the video & had enough of his prattling. That & the comparison tractor is a POS. Could have at least gone with a Deere or something. I'll be digging around for more vids about the Solectrac, but I can already about guess what's out there

My major complaint about the Solectrac is lack of interchangeable battery. That's just dumb.

Maybe Milwaukee Electric Tool will come out with an electric tractor? That would be something I'd look at more seriously. They'd be more prone to not making a giant turd muffin.

Heck.... someone get a hold of Elon!! 😅

Given how much Milwaukee batteries cost, I can’t imagine the stack of hundreds it would take to have spare batteries for this thing. How heavy are they? I assume pretty heavy? The initial cost, with extra batteries, that would be ridiculous.

Milwaukee is good at bundling things for a decent price. Tractor & two batteries, charging unit, etc. all balled into one deal.

You bring up a good question. Wonder how much those batteries weigh? Can't be as bad as forklift batteries. The mass just isn't there. Could probably pull the Solectrac battery with an engine hoist.

He should have run the diesel on the mower same field size to compare work done vs time to do it

Did they have one set up to play with? A good way to pitch an electric tractor, would be to set up indoor demos.

Electrall 2.0.

The electric outlets on that 75 reminded me of my CC 3225. It was supposed to have a generator & 110 outlet to run tools off of. That never materialized & neither did the rear PTO. The former would have been really handy to have.

We almost didn't get it at the time for that reason, but that was a better deal than what Ford-NH was offering for a loaded 1520. The funny thing is, the CaseIH dealer gave us a great deal on a trade in toward the 3225 & the Ford dealer wouldn't even look at it. It was a fully restored 8N with some attachments, also restored. I always thought that was a bit backward. The 8N sold about two weeks after the trade, too.

Dealing with damaged EVs.  What fun.  Read the comments.

This is the problem of goverment pushing the roll out the technology to fast because of idelology

Lithium-ion batteries and there Nickel-based chemistries create their own oxygen during a thermal event, which means they burn fast and are hard to extinguish,

Emerging technologies such as lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) and solid-state batteries—which contain no flammable liquid electrolytes—virtually eliminate the problem

So all the Lithium-ion battery powered EVs likley will be out of favor as the insurance companies jack your rates for having one.

They’ll have to sell off the farm division and become Fordistar

Unfortunately no there aren’t any demonstrations at that show.

I don’t know if you’re being serious here or not. Ford sold off their ag division long ago. CNH now has the old Ford ag stuff and is owned by the Fiat/Stellantis company that also own Chrysler/Ram/Dodge.

Ford broke their business into three parts- regular and hybrid vehicles (Blue), full electric (E) and fleet/commercial (Pro).
Here’s their Q2 2023 earnings report

...down under, in a place called central Otago,  one bloke, running an orchard and the other hot seller  at the moment, a vine yard ...enthusiastically embraced   the  electric   power train as the way forward....

He imported, at horrendous cost , an electric powered tractor  , from the United States....The brand name escapes me, it certainly was not  "Farmall ''

I will go back thru the Farming Magazines to see if I can find the relevant detail...but I recall the cost of the machine in NZ  Dollars       around 150 K  plus freight   and all the other BS that goes with something quite different from the normal....

(USD  equates about 60 cents NZD  )

The general consensus from the local cockies was that Diesel was unlikely   to be pushed aside by these coal powered tractors.......and...as it has been long since realised overseas , by folk who have and indeed  , use their    brain....""where has all the power gone ''?

Mike
