W6tractor
Related to my post on removing range cover on 886, I want to replace cab mounts as they have collapsed and are causing binding of range shifters. I can’t find any info on what to do and possible problems to anticipate. Any suggestions for removal and replacement are appreciated. Waiting on a few new parts to reassemble/reinstall range cover. Thanks.
IHC_1470
Jack cab up to take weight off. Biggest issue is often the flat plate is froze tight to the bolt that it is threaded onto. Do what ever you need to get it broke free. I made a cab support stand years ago for splitting. Check a service manual to see what IHC used and make one from pipe. HydroTek
Jack the cab some and unbolt the support bracket from the axle for the rear -- you will not need to mess with the threaded plate that way -- this works easy on the rear mounts -- front is a little more difficult , but can be done Supporting the front of the cab is easier if you have tools for the job -- I used a jack cylinder with an adjustable "pole" on it to raise the cab -- you could strap from the bottom of the steps to keep them from "spraddling" and jack from the step -- or use a cherry picker and lift from the top cab step , open the little door
W6tractor
Thanks. Don’t know for sure if rears need replacing, but probably will. Is there a solid spot at front to Jack from?
HydroTek
Steps if you strap or chain the together so they dont spread or under the floor plate , gonna have to remove the battery carrier anyway -- plenty of room then
W6tractor
Need to rebuild battery box anyway, so that works. My steps are a little sketchy, so I’ll try to avoid lifting from them. Appreciate the help.

W6tractor
Tractor me is working, still needs linkage adjustment. Ordered new mounts to replace all 4. While waiting, I shimmed the existing mounts on the front. One bolt/nuts in rear not letting loose. Question:do the studs for each mount slide all the way through the mounts, or are they fastened in the middle some way? Thanks for the help. Jeff-C-IL
DO NOT use the steps. If you remove the lower front cover in front of the battery box & steps (where the light sits in), you will see the bottom of the square frame tube. I've lifted the cab a little many times by using a handyman jack hooked into the bottom of that tube. I also have some camper jacks with an angle iron and a bolt sticking up. The bolt goes in the bottom of the tube to prevent sliding off, then the entire cab goes up as the jacks get cranked on both sides and another under the back..... Thanks for the help. for the rear mounts -- remove the top nut , remove the 4 mounting bolts -- then hold the square plate in a vice and remove the 2 jammed nuts -- the stud will slide out support the cab how ever you have can -- I used a pole jack under the cab frame
W6tractor
Thanks. Nut on one rear mount soaking. Fronts came lose-not off yet. Used handyman jack and 2x6 to lift from front corner of cab. 40+ years of rust and grime is a challenge.
W6tractor
HydroTek, can you provide some clarification on the 4 mounting bolts and the process for removing the rear mounts? If I had done it before , I’m sure it would be very clear. Thanks.
HydroTek
Rear mounts are the easy one -- you are removing the mounting bracket from the rear axle -- two short bolts and two longer bolts Remove the nut up top that holds the mount to the cab frame and drop the whole thing out oh yeah, the 2 fuel tank mount bolts also then grab the square plate in a vice and either screw the stud out or remove the two nuts -- whichever is easier support the cab however you feel safe -- there are several ways to do it Snap vice-grips on the square tubing and floor plate to keep the floor from dropping if you remove both rear mounts at the same time -- best todo just one side at a time you can use a square shaft in the square tube to lift with or a strap on the grab handle I use a small fork lift -- in and out in just a few minutes
W6tractor
Thanks. That is very clear. Thanks for the hint to do one side at a time. Will give an update once done.
