Highland
Good evening all, been reading this forum for awhile, just recently bought a 656 hydro, I looked up the serial number and believe it is 1969 international, the guy I bought it from said it quit and they towed it, said it locked up, he did get it running again but only on four cylinders, I have a local IH guy that said he would repair it for me, I’m going to try and get it running so I can load it, it’s a diesel utility model with international 3000 loader. Looking forward to the discussion, I currently make hay with B-275.
snoshoe
Can read that a couple different ways. What I get out of it is engine trouble and a destroyed hydro.
Highland
I got a battery in the tractor, just one spot for battery, left side of seat, checked the oil and water. Couldn’t get starter to engage, have power to stater from battery, have power to push button switch, power on other side when switch is pushed, no power on small wire on solenoid, I checked switch on inching pedal and it was unplugged on one side, I tried to short starter across and did get starter to spin but didn’t engage. I also tested glow plug gauge and it is hot both sides and the button below it is cold both sides with key on and off.
Jacka
I would put it in neutral, (transmission),right side and push it on,drag it or at the worst with come a long
Jeff-C-IL
First of all welcome. You picked a fun tractor (a good one if you can get here going again) Unfortunately towing the hydros is usually a bad idea. IDK a lot about the hydros - but would think the hydro in neutral and pedal pushed down would be the safety start switches. Jumping as noted should both spin & engage the starter - if not its a starter issue. As noted, neutral & drag it onto a trailer to get it to a mechanic. Suspect cranking problem there. When jumping starter. Jump from battery terminal to terminal with small wire. That makes starter engage as well as turn. You have lost connection between glow plug meter and push button. And second battery goes in bottom of steering column.
560Dennis
Welcome highland . only thing I can say is , if you going to commit to this ? Be prepared to spend three to four times your present budget to get it going. Project like that cost a lot of time and money. No shortcuts
Highland
Thanks all,Dennis, my current budget is im a broke beef farmer/ carpenter. I’m looking to make it functional so I can make hay with it and then I’ll keep chipping away at the rest, gotta love a good struggle.I also own a UD18 that I power my circular sawmill with, that one starts on gas and runs on diesel. Highland
Snowshoe, the inching pedal is foot controlled I could see switch under floor board behind pedal.
snoshoe
I'm going to translate that as a hand controlled model.
Matt Kirsch
I'm going to be honest with you. If you haven't paid for the tractor yet, walk away. This is not something that someone on a "broke beef farmer's" budget can afford to mess with. Both the D282 engine and the hydro transmission are EXPENSIVE items to fix. You'll have $10,000 in an engine overhaul that won't hold because you can't get a decent head gasket for these engines anymore. I don't even know how much it costs for a hydro service from Herr's these days. Last I heard it was $5000, but that was close to 10 years ago... Hydros are not something the average shadetree mechanic can or should tackle themselves. When you say they towed it, that's a problem. You can't tow a hydro the wrong way without causing thousands of dollars worth of damage. Unless you can get more details on HOW they towed it, you should not touch the tractor with a 10' pole. If they tried to "pop start" it by towing, it's junk. If they put the range transmission in neutral and towed it to get it out of the way, there's hope. Highland
I give less than a $1000 for it, I figure the loader is worth that, if it’s shot I’ll buy one that’s running and have lots of parts, or sell it for parts and double my money .gotta get it to shop to see what’s wrong with it and go from there, I know this guy personally and he is a great IHGuy.
hobbyfarm
I hate to discourage you but I would run away and run as fast as you can. "It locked up and was running on 4 cylinders" are big issues. The hydro being towed or shot to begin with is a whole nother can of worms. You could get several 1000 in the engine alone unless you do everything yourself. For what you are going to get in this thing you could by a more sound one and be money ahead. I have a gear drive 656. Very nimble tractor that works great for us tedding and raking hay, etc. I probably have $10000 in it over the last 10 years and that doesn't include any major engine or trans work. That is just tires, rims, brakes, starter, injection pump, front end parts, clutch/ipto shaft, and numerous misc things. We just keep fixing whatever comes up. Jacka
Since you already bought it as you said in your post I like to offer some pluses.I always wanted a 656 hydro narrow front to add to my other hydros. The 282 when you get it running is a very fuel efficient engine. If you get it rebuilt correctly it will last a lifetime if you rake care of it. We had a 656 and yes glow plugs had to work, but for their size they really pulled. We pulled 710 auto 4'16s with ours.It made her work but she did it.We had a combine with one in it too.The hydro you will love if you use it correctly. I have 3 hydros and love them all.Hydros are tougher than the hydro haters believe or want to admit. But when you get this tractor running it will be a world away from your B275.Good luck and no matter keep moving forward with it.

Maybe no one has already toasted the hydro? - not sure why "neutral" on a hydro seems so widely elusive still today. Cheater for I656: Neutral is really close to 'high', and pretty far from 'low'
Highland
Update, got a guy with trailer with a winch, hooked on drawbar, put it in neutral. And it rolled onto the trailer backwards, tires not quite as good as I thought, it’s headed to shop tomorrow so we can see what I bought, had an IH guy ask me at coffee shop the other day if I bought a 656, he said if it doesn’t work out he would be interested in it for parts, he also told me he had a gear shift transmission that would fit it.
886 dreaming
you mention using gear shift transmission if the hydro is bad. If you were to bolt the standard transmission to the hydro rear end you will have 1 forward gear and 5 reverse gears. ring and pinion would need to be flipped. A lot of other parts would also need to be changed. flow control valve, oil cooler lines are just a few of the problems.
