Geoff_in_MN
Nothing wrong with the tractor really. I've got a decent manual for this thing, and nowhere does it show the light pictured. Anybody else have this light, or was it an add-on? Edited August 7 by Geoff_in_MN Update
ksfarmdude
Looks like an add-on never seen a light in that spot before Does it ever come on?
HydroTek
Hydrostat drive on this tractor ?
Geoff_in_MN
Yes hydro. Yes it comes on and lately just constant. I'm thinking just a light to indicate key "on". It has an add-on fuse holder as well. Edited August 5 by Geoff_in_MN Info

HydroTek
That is a high oil temp light -- it should only come on if the oil is hot Check the sender wire to be sure there are no bare spots Left side behind the starter on the MCV

Mild Bill
If I recall correctly... I think our 756 diesel had that light and it was a key on light, that came on if the key was on but the engine was not running. The 756 has sold at my folks machinery auction roughly 20 years ago. but maybe it was used for different purposes on different models.

Jacka
We had one on a 656.I think if key is on and tractor not running it was on.Also maybe blinked on and off until warmed up but been 45 years since it left the farm

I'm gonna do some checking and trace some wires.
snoshoe
Just unhook the sender. Light still on? Wire grounded. Light off? Sender bad.

Geoff_in_MN
Found it! Took some disassembly but I found the sending unit. HydroTek and snoshoe were absolutely correct. Wire to high temp sending unit was grounding out in 2 spots. What is puzzling to me is the factory operator's manual gives no indication of a light or a sending unit despite having fairly detailed schematics and photos of the various 656 dash layouts. I took the wire with connectors out for the time being. May or may not replace it in the future. At least it's documented here for the time being. Thanks fellas!
HydroTek
Glad you got it figured out I have the International model , a lot less room to work in that area Only time I ever had the light come on was pulling a 12 foot disk mostly just use the tractor for brush hogging and loading round bales out of the field now days 1
Diesel Doctor
I looked and that light is not shown in the Case/IH parts diagram for the 656. It must be a figment of our imagination?
chadd
Could it have originally been tied to the same tell light in the cluster gauge as engine oil pressure? I don't remember a light there on our 656 hydro. On our 806, the MCV press and engine oil press use the same light.

Correct, the dump valve was used on foot controlled models, the hand controlled models used the Foot-N-Inch valve that allowed feathering of the drive via the foot pedal.
