Tractor of the week. Week 30: 1566

Recommended Posts

Largest of the 2wd 66 series machines, this beast features the 3 speed transmission and outboard planetary final drives.  I know that DT Fan has one on his wish list!

Im slowly collecting parts and some paint to return mine.  Has 3600 verified hours but it's sat outside quite a bit.

From shows mostly and one from the local tire shop.  Some are the same tractor at different shows I think.

Probably the most hp/$ muscle tractor a guy can buy from what I've seen. It really baffles me how much criticism they get for their 12 speed transmission (with TA ) when there were plenty of other brand tractors running around with 8 speeds at the time.

Here is our big machine. Have a 1566 and a 1586. Going to sell the 1566 soon. And for anybody looking for one check out Bisman  here in ND. There is a nice 3 pt 1566 with bad rod bearing on there now for 4000. Neighbor has a 5488 I want to borrow it and snap a picture of the big tractors. Sorry just looked they want 8000. I always wanted to get a 666,766 and the whole lineup. Now I want to get the 86 series. And try and get the big tractor of every series. 15,30 or 22 36, w40,  W9, 650, 660, we have 1206 and 1256 but need the 14 then the 1566 , 1586 and 5488. Sad thing is we had or neighbors had the lineup but need to rebuild it again.

Completely agree.   Road speed isn't as fast as a 10 or 14 but otherwise gears work out pretty well.  Low 3rd or high 1 are field gears which kinda stinks because you gotta change ranges depending on what your doing.   Grunt though you can't beat them.

I've never run one but a person can run in TA all day (we often run 4L TA on the 1086 planting) so I consider hydraulic TA equipped tractors as 16 or in this case 12 speed.

Certainly a beast in its day.  A few years ago I saw one on the local dealers lot parked next to a line of the new "utilities".  Still can't get over how small it looked compared to them.  My how farming has changed.
