After 8 years..

Recommended Posts

I finally had to replace my drill and impact. The drill got where it wouldn’t work periodically, replacing the battery would sometimes make it start again, sometimes not, then for no apparent reason it would come back to life for a day or 2. The impact trigger started getting weird, all about the same time. The 5.0 batteries they came with are still going. This new impact is 4.6” long, went with a hammer drill this time with some trepidation.

I have an older but similar set. I think you will find the hammer function to be handy for smaller holes like anchors and tapcons but slower than a rotary hammer type drill. If you are used to a corded rotary hammer, you may not be impressed. However for a few small holes it is certainly handier than dragging out another tool and cord. If you have a bunch of holes or anything bigger, you'll need something more capable. I would like to get a cordless rotary hammer but can't really justify the price.

You are going to be super impressed by that impact. I  bought a bunch of those hex shanked  drillbits, extra short and use them with the impact for super tight spaces. homedepot.com seems to have the best prices on all of the red stuff. I bought two batteries two weeks ago and was considering  buying that kit like you just bought again as well to get the batteries

That was my thought, getting out the rotary hammer, cord, case of bits etc to poke in 4 flange anchors is a pain, used to be er drills were 2” longer and weighed a ton, this isn’t bad so I will try it.

I usually buy the drill and impact as individual kits to get 4 batteries, but it seemed like the thing to do the other day getting this kit. I think it was about $420 but I can’t remember because I asked about a couple other things, including the sequential charging bank.

I like the hammer feature. Mine is a few years old but still.

I sent one back for repair and it came back as a hammer drill. I was pretty annoyed, so it got relegated to the basement, too bulky.

I would be quite surprised if you didn’t like the hammer drill option. Both my DeWalts have had it and it is the ideal method of drilling holes in concrete for small concrete fasteners like nails and Tapcon type screws. I have a bigger 120V SDS type hammer drill also, but for those sub - 1/4” holes I prefer the cordless hammer drill. I can’t tell that using the percussion function has shortened the life of the tool either. Maybe it’s because I find some other way to kill the drill prematurely.

one thing I did notice was weather it is red or yellow, the newer ones do perform better than the earlier versions, however at the time those tolls were pretty nice also.I have noticed this improvement in the yellow lines recently, 1/2 inch impact and 1/4 inch impact driver,

Love my milwaukee stuff. Love the 1/2" impact so much I broke down and bought the electric chain saw, Now I own the weed whip, leaf blower, and the grinder.

It's crazy how long the big XC12.0 battery last. I can weed whip for 30 minutes straight, I've cut trees at work for over an hour.

We had dewalt for years and liked them, not stirring my pot any. Milwaukee knocks off 100 bucks on new purchases periodically if you trade in a competitor’s tool, those dewalts have probably saved 1,000 bucks after years of good service.

Is it Milwaukee that knocks off the $$ or your local dealer?

Do they need the tool and battery or just the tool?

Certain retailers can run the promotion, in my case almost all our tools have come from Webb, also convenient for warranty issues, drop it off and they call when it is read. They are supposed to have a tool and 2 batteries, but they have been happy with a tool and one battery so far.

We have a big state wide industrial supply outlet type store here. I’ve heard them promote that deal. Although their prices are always $100 high anyway, so it’s a trade off. If the older guys still worked there I’d buy more there but the store is staffed by kids now you couldn’t care less who you are, unless you’re buying big $$$ to outfit a company or something. And they don’t stock parts anymore either.

I’m pretty sure that kit was $309 at Home Depot recently.  I am eyeballing the multi tool currently. I don’t have a cordless one

I just checked the part number, 349 from home depot I checked the receipt, paid 402, I never know if the HD tool is the exact same one or not, part number to part number that is, I will say that often they offer, and stock, a lesser quality tool. Numerous times I have had someone telling me about the great deal they got and how I got screwed, when I finally see it, its a home owner grade tool with 2ah batteries

I have a few dozen of the 18v Fuel pieces, I buy most of them from homedepot.com when they’re on sale.  Fuel, is Fuel. There’s no difference other than some have that OneLink or whatever it’s called. I agree though that some people could probably accidentally buy the lesser non fuel ones and not realize it though.  I bought two 5a batteries for $143 shipped 4th of July weekend.  I wanted to try 6’s but the 5’s have been good to me.  I used a 9 helping a buddy a few weeks ago….too heavy for what I do.
I’ve actually started buying some of the smaller fuel 12v stuff.  Was sinking 3.5”. deck screws into 20 year old poles with the 12v driver Sunday.

We have 6’s, they are cumbersome, use them for stationary tools, like the light, they are ok for the power hand saw, grinder etc.
