Auto steer ideas

Recommended Posts

As I sit on the front porch listening to the Reds and sipping my Busch "latte";

I have been thinking about putting auto steer in my planting tractors. I use a McCormick MTX 135 on my corn planter and a 7120 on my bean planter.

What brand do I start to look at? I would like to get one system that I could move from one tractor to the other (very rarely that both tractors are planting at the same time). Was thinking one system could save me money. I already have a very basic Raven guidance without autosteer  in each of these tractors.

Thank you for any input

I have an Ag-Leader system in an older Deere tractor that I use with a Kinze 24 row (60’) planter. I use an InCommand 1200 Ag-Leader display for the planter monitor and to control the steering. I use an OnTrac3 steering wheel motor. The OnTrac has been replaced by something newer by Ag-Leader now. It works great, but is not cheap. There are things out there cheaper, but I have no experience with them. There are people who build their own system, but I guess I’m not smart enough for that. I need technology that is plug and play. I think we spent $20K on everything to set up the planter monitor, display, steering wheel system and receiver and that was before things went crazy. It was probably 5 years ago now. The planter already had the electric clutches on it when we installed this system. I use a Deere gps antenna on mine because they used to be easy to find. I’d hate to run a planter without it now because it is so much better.

A friend is selling outback auto steer systems. I think he's less than $10,000 for a system that uses a special steering wheel.

I'm leaning towards building my own like @ZG6E.

I’m not very well versed in the auto steer technology so can’t add anything. Brother uses Ag Leader is all I know. It’s integrated in the 305 but I believe he has to move a steering wheel between the 270 and combine.

But I’m glad you were able to listen to your Reds get beaten by my Brewers.😉

You already have Raven. Just add the auto steer. Unless they used dated dramatically, Raven isn’t very portable though.

This is the raven screen I have, I am not sure if they are autosteer compatible. It is a Raven Cruizer series from way back when.IMG_20230710_184331493_HDR.thumb.jpg.f2479835dde127fba975fcd596efc1c4.jpg

I put auto steer on the 1254 Rogator I ran in 2000. Only reason we went with Raven at the time was because everything was an add on. Started with a light bar and kept adding until it went where it was supposed to. Of course that’s 23 years ago.
