Tractor of the week. Week 26: 350

Recommended Posts

This week marks the mid point of the year. How is that possible? This week's feature is the 350.  Available as a row crop, high crop or utility, high utility or wheatland style; this handy sized machine was available with the IH gas, LP or Continental diesel engine.  Here is mine to start off the photos:

One of my favorites because I believe it was the first tractor I ever drove. Great Grandpa bought it new in 57’. Needs work but at least it’s still in the family. Power Steering and T/A with just a drawbar. Second pic is him picking with it in the early 60’s.  There were several 350’s in the neighborhood.  My great uncle had a 350D which his son still owns and is the 3rd pic.  It has spin out wheels also.68E72A27-1CE7-44A2-89BC-3B5512BCA3E9.jpeg.1bca1384a6d8797df47cad203528b35f.jpeg9CE1F408-0442-4D66-98AD-ED54516A30EB.jpeg.b362ac1482aa7cf6566462e65a8e972d.jpeg03600849-673B-4AA6-8206-3F1A960C9009.jpeg.43dbb1187392b70f7aff0d5c87822687.jpeg

All the rest are from shows.

I had a 350 diesel at one time.  Sold it for three times as much as what I paid for it.  It had the spin out wheels and fast hitch.  Sorry no pictures.

My grandpa, dad, and uncle used to farm with a 350 with the diesel. Said it started better than the 450d but wasn't nearly the power. Used to run the 450 on the silo blower and one to chop with and the 350 used to wear a loader and run boxes. I remember the old 300 that we had that never seemed to run right or start well. Always put the hotter plugs in it to get it to run "good". That one also was a loader. Nice sized machines for back in the early 80's to mid 90's. I wish somewhat they still would be suitable on our farm.

Dad had a 350 utility with the auxiliary fuel tank behind the seat. Wish I knew where that tractor went. Used to be my favorite tractor to drive when I was 8-10 years old

here is my high utility. Sloppy steering box needs to be changed for a power steering box from another 350U tractor in parts row. Previous owner did a paint brush paint job on it, and apparently didn't like the hot foot exhaust, so cut a hole in the hood for an upright exhaust.

Those High Utilities have always fascinated me. So much so, I'd like to find one for my little collection. I assume they're in the middle (height wise) between a 350 RC and 350U? What size is the rear rubber?

high U's have 38" on back, same as Farmalls, and have longer spindles in front for the 16" tires. Also bar axles rather than flanges. My 350 and 460 hi utilities have 13.6x38 rears and the 656s have 15.5x38. I think you sit a little lower than a Farmall model, but definitely higher than on a regular utility.

Was there any real advantage to that configuration? I guess I'm trying to understand the purpose of them. I'd still like to own one though.

gains a lot of visibility height-wise and taller/narrower tires (imho- better for row crop work and better traction) than a regular utility, shorter wheelbase than a Farmall for loader work. Downside for 656 loader work is the front suspension supported in 2 places ahead of the swept-back axle, instead of ahead and behind like a "normal" tractor. Does funny things to the bushing's wear pattern.

Difference in front spindles between my 460 HU and my 460U donor tractor- granted the parts tractor has 26" combine tires/ one flat, but I think you can see the differences.

Dad had a 300U that my brother and I called the Traction Master, b/c it had none. Not a problem with the 350HU.

Aaron, sorry this has taken the 350 post sideways.

Might have a show picture or three? I think a 350 would look good under my roof, right next to the 450 I don't have yet either! I believe the first two are the same tractor, pictures taken different years at our local show. Might have some others on my phone.

If anyone runs across Farmall 350 gas #2898 S my grandpa bought it new from Harney's in Aledo ILL in the spring of '57 and it got traded back there in the early to mid '60s for a 560D -Dad knew the guys that bought it but lost track of it after they got rid of it -and they couldn't remember where it went. Like to have it back if it still exists or at least know if it has a good home. we have gotten several of grandpas tractors back the last 10 years so far.
