Tractor of the week. Week 25: 686

Recommended Posts

Here are some others I have pics of. I love the NF with the canopy.  It was advertised as having a turbo also. Had I  not bought the one I have it would be here…

Question:  Are these tractors (656, 666, and 686 series) rear ends still a continuation of the original H or M transmission and rear end?  Maybe a continuation of the 300/400 would be more appropriate comparison since they have the T/A and live PTO but those are direct descendants of the H/M.

I have never been around the 6x6 series tractor so only basing this on what I've read previously.

The transmission legacy is similar but if you want to get down to the Brass Tacks (another IH demonstrator promotion) the 656 - 66 - 86 were essentially refinements of the 560 tractor. Hydro 70 / 86 were closely related, of course. All very good tractors and highly acclaimed years after production ceased since tractors of comparable capability are radically more expensive, many of which aren't really as capable even though the hp is the same on paper.

Dad bought a 686 German motor new.  Way more HP then the 656 it replaced.  It like a flywheel ring gear every other year though.

My Grandpa bought a brand new 686 around 1976 or so as I remember, his had the two vertical oil filters instead of the single horizontal. Which is Which?

Earlier 686 models (and 666 models) used the IH 312 engine with the two vertical filters. Later models of the 686 had a German 310 with the single horizontal filter.

Thank you for the Info!
