IH 1206 Introduction

Did any of you guys work for IH or buy a 1206 when they came out ?  Did IH have an aggressive demo program to get them in the hand of farmers ?  
 

I always thought IH probably set the 12’s at 120-125hp out the gate.  Seems like the $800,000 they spent on the drivetrain rework and engine enhancements would be expensive for the additional 18hp they rated them over the 806.  Heck an 806 with an M&W turbo were running 115hp.  
 

Do any of you guys remember that time period for the 1206 or other models ?

Red Reaper / Kristin Gall is our 1206 specialist 👍 they came out at 112 hp in October of 1965 is what Kristin told me . The delay was the new 38” wheels /tires and the manufacturer couldn’t keep the tires from failing . They were scheduled for earlier introduction but the tires was the hold up .

What held up the 1206 was tires. When the IH Solar turbo spun up the extra horseyponies the sidewalls would flex and the rim would spin on the bead even with the scant few 18.4-38 tires available in the marketplace. Firestone created the Deep Tread tire for the 1206 and the one here still had it's original set when it arrived in 1997. Pulled a 5-18's 720 that fall and the old skins still pulled although the thirty year old lugs were shallow. There's no telling where the fuel screw was wired by the time the early examples were demonstrated on the farm but even a mild 125 hp would overextend six ply tires in hard pulling.

Are all modern Tires 8 ply? I don’t have many memories from the 70s because I was born in the 70s but we ran 34 inch tires in the 80s, turned up way past 125, never had an issue.  What would cause a tire to slip on the beat anyway? Sidewall Flex? I am not a tractor puller but those tires certainly Flex and did back in the 70s as well I’m sure

I take it bead locks or screws would have just shredded the tire?

We had a brand new 1066 BS that sure was cool despite being no hp champ in addition to some other issues. It would easily buckle the sidewalls of the factory 6 ply tires it arrived with on that Loadstar rollback in the spring of 1976. I never witnessed the bead slip but those tires weren't on the tractor more than a week after it arrived. When my old tire guy who's since gone on to the Big Firestone Dealer In The Sky switched the original Deep Tread tires on the 1206 for Super All Traction he told me the Deep Tread was Firestone's answer to the original weak sidewall issue.

…..got a funny 1206 story from back in the day. One of our neighbors had a 1206 he bought from new. When the ‘66 series came out be traded the 1206 in on a new 1066. So he completely skipped owning any ‘56 series, up to that point anyways.

He got the 10’ in time for heavy Fall tillage work. It wasn’t long before he became dis-enchanted with his 1066 from a power stand point. He claimed it was gutless compared to his old 1206. I can’t remember if he had twisted the tail on his 1206- (cranked it up?) But he  probably did lol. He went back to the dealer and wanted his 1206 back, but here they had sold it. Around that same time, here someone had traded their like new 1456 in on a new 1466.

So my neighbor’s  IH salesman had called him and told him he had taken in a nice 1456 on trade. My neighbor told him to bring it out to his farm to give it a try. He made a few rounds on it with a 6-16’s semi-mounted in furrow plow, and told the salesman to leave it and get that new 10’ outta here. Lol… True story.

Anyone else experience a let down like that from a brand new ‘66 series, after having owned a 1206, or say even a 1256 or 1456?

I still maintain that the 1206, 1256, 1456 tractors were the quintessential “mean machines” of that entire era of tractors, regardless of brand.

I have never operated a 1206 or 12/1456, but having put many hours on a second hand but decent 1066 it does not surprise me that some were disappointed by the 1066.  Ours was no earth shaking powerhouse.  It was an early SN machine.  It got to a point while we owned it that the injector pump needed to be rebuilt.  The shop that did the pump R&R asked if we wanted it turned up a little, presumably to make up the hp difference between early and late SN.  We agreed but it made little difference.  Just a little more smoke under load.

Ran them all. Probably ran a 806 turbo with 18.4 34 duals most of all. That tractor pulled more for its size than any other tractor. Dad had the pump switched to a 4 roller setup and they dynoed it a few times at around 150 hp. We had a 966 414 with turbo added. 18,4 38 duals. The 806 standard would outpull that tractor. Not from horsepower but just traction it seemed as the 806 pulled the front would lift a bit and it would just hook up better. 966 would rev up and spin tires not run out of hp. Both tractors were standard drawbar, dual wheels, tires about the same. I think both had Firestone traction field and road on inside tires. Both had deluxe series 66 cab also.  Dad had a 1206 standard same time as 806. He traded 1206 for 1466 then 1466 for a new 1586. The 1586 was his favorite tractor. Dad actually hated his 1206, started a bit harder than 806 , narrow cab on 1206 with big single tires, 806 had rear entry egging cab and then the deluxe 66 series. He somewhat tolerated the 1466 but by that time he had a 7020 jd 4wd as main big tractor.

Very rare to see a 706 in this part of New York. An 806 was more common, but not nearly as common as a 1066. My father plowed with our 806 (6-16’s) with a turbo for 15 years before getting our first 1066. He was really disappointed as well, but the in field pump adjustment fixed that. It still has a tad less power than 806, but a lot more traction. I have an 856 with a turbo that’s almost as powerful. Neighbor had a 1206 that he bought fairly new, and a 1066 that he bought new. He always considered a 1066 his bigger tractor. Still has it, it’s an animal.

Same here, 706 and 806 were common but 1206’s were “ too big” at that time.

There were two 1206's around here back in the day,  both were turned up and "BAD".

I was a teenager when they showed up and was very impressed with them,  thought they were a cool running and looking tractor.

Probably why I have one now.... to bring back memories of my youth.

My dad bought our 806 new in 1965. 
when the 1206 came out the dealer put on a clinic and invited all the local farmers to come to the dealership. 
they had a bunch of parts on tables showing the difference between an 806 and a 1206. 
bigger fan, heavier clutch and so on.  
they were definitely trying to get people to buy a 12 rather than just putting a turbo on their 806.

Dad always told me the story of him running a 1206 for a guy back in the day pulling a 6-16 on land plow with it. Dad said they had a hard time keeping the front end down and had issues breaking U bolts on the wheels until they dropped a bottom off the plow.

We've had two 1066s for a long time. One pulls good but the other is much stronger and both injection pumps are set up the same. I have wondered if the timing is set different or something.

1066s are well though of round here.

There were two 1066's here, one BS and the other was a Red Cab but I can't recall if it was a 74 or 5. Sure wish I knew. Seat of the pants dyno indicated the 74 had another 15-20 ponies than the Bravo Sierra. Then there was the 72 1466 which would eat the lunch of both 10's and look for seconds and dessert. In the spring of 1978, a 1456 with factory Excel cab arrived on a rental basis since neither 10 was able to sufficiently pull the 21' 490 disk while the 1466 was remanded to planter duty as it had frame mounted tanks for the planter and moving the tanks wasn't on the agenda. That 1456 would pull the disk in 2H Direct if you wanted ridges. When it was road time the fun meter pegged because any sort of rolling start enabled a quick transition to Big Gear Direct. Top speed would arrive in 200 feet during a dicey steering situation even though 1000 lbs were perched on the front bracket. Smoke filled the sky like an octopus dumping ink into the water to evade capture.

Those Solar turbo's on the 12 Oh's had a sound to them that made a guy smile.

Back off the throttle in a hurry and you got the whistle.

I read an excerpt of an Octane Press article on Facebook that said when the 1206 came out it was "the darling of Ag Journalists" all over the country. My family skipped the 06/56 series and got an Oliver 1850 with a cab, over an open station 806. Hindsight 20/20 my dad said he wishes they woulda got the 806. Their next tillage tractor was their first 1066. I've told him what guys have said on here about the 12s having more power than the 10s and he said "they must be quite a tractor then" So I went ahead and bought a 1256. We now have a representation of every series from the 60 series-88 series on the farm

Guy I know was a mechanic in his younger days at an IH dealer around here. A 1206 was traded in and the boys in the shop decided the 12 needed some dyno exercise so they hooked up, got it sufficiently warm, and started turning the screw. He said it made 225 hp with more available but the pto started to slip. The smoke was glorious.

My dad now owns a 1206 that his cousin once owned (possibly since new). The cousin ran it for custom tillage set at 195. Fluid, duals, Oliver fuel tank fenders. It was a beast! It also was a regular visitor to the IH service bays…

195 is a great plenty. Ours has been at 150 since it arrived here. Had it in for a clutch and T/A two or three years later. The previous owner used it for grain wagon duty and abused the Torque as an engine brake against regulations like so many have done. The head gasket was replaced not too long ago and service manager asked if we wanted to turn it down some but we left it there. Instinct tells me the gasket was bad from misapplication of booger sugar rather than excessive ponies because it weeped some when it arrived but nary a drop since replacement and it starts better.
