attaboy
has anyone come up with a more fool proof starting system for the BD diesel? seems i go thru resistors and sometimes glow plugs more than i should be. sit on the glow plugs to long and caboom. the TD-5 seems to be working better and can keep the glow plugs on for a minuite? Binderdan
I have an IH 384 tractor that has the BD154 diesel engine. The glow plugs were problematic. The original glow plugs are wired in series and include a resistor. So if one glow plug or the resistor goes bad they all go out, like Christmas lights. I found a solution for mine by using Bosch Duratherm glow plugs (Bosch # 0250201044) wired in parallel, so 12v to each plug. The inline resistor is no longer needed. I wired the new glow plugs up on a common starter relay(Like a Standard SS558) activated by a momentary push button switch, which is overkill but works well. This is a common upgrade on the B-275, B-414, 364, 384, and other tractors with the BD154 engine. I have been very happy with the results. attaboy
so did you find it starts better? and also does this system not burn out as regularily, if at all?
Binderdan
Yes, as long as fuel didn't lose prime it starts right up after holding glow plug button 10 seconds or so. Has not burned out yet. The two components that are prone to "burning out" on the original system is the coil in the resistor itself, and the heating element on the glow plugs(x4). If any one of these 5 components burns out the circuit opens and stops working. The upgraded system eliminates the resistor, so that wont burn out. And the Bosch glow plugs are of a bayonet type, not a wire loop type, which has much longer life and no loop to melt and open the circuit. It is also wired in parallel at full 12v not in series at 1.5v, so if one glow plug does fail the others still work as normal. Original BD154 glow plug Upgraded Bosch 80035/0250201044. I understand these are stock for a Mercedes Benz car. I got a little creative and gutted my original resistor housing and put a red LED light inside that illuminates the resistor housing when the glow plugs are activated. Kinda like the original resistor was supposed to glow red visibly when activated so you could tell if it was working. But that is not necessary.
attaboy
well thanks very much for that you are rite my one crawler seems to be ok at present but just burnt out two resistors on the other one. so i am going to price out these glow plugs, by the way do they have the same thread as the old glow plugs? i pressume they do. thanks
mike newman
....down under, we have been replacing the now '' unobtainable' factory glow plugs in BD 264 and 281 engines with Toyota Land cruiser plugs ...this requires an adaptor...and is irrelevant to your size British Diesel...but as Binderdan implies....after that ''upgrade'' its all go !! Binderdan
No adapter needed for the Bosch 80035/0250201044, threads right in. There is another setup people try that uses glow plugs like a 7.3 diesel that requires an adapter, but not this setup I described.

Binderdan
So it appears the Bosch 80035/0250201044 glow plugs have been discontinued since I did my conversion. That's disappointing. After some playing around on the Google machine the ones you are probably finding are new old stock, so you might want to bite the bullet and pay the $20.53 each for NOS Bosch ones on Amazon. Good news is the Bosch number does cross reference to a couple other brands. I can't stand behind the accuracy of this but the photos and description look correct. Bosch 80035/0250201044 cross reference to... BREMI 25039 Valeo 345195 I found some of the BREMI ones for a bit less money. But if it was me I'd spring for the Bosch while you can get them. Now that I know this I may grab a spare set while they can be got.
hardtail
Having spares almost guarantees they will never be needed and may rise in value as time goes by
