ky966boy
I’ve been looking for single axle semi mainly IH of course but Volvos seem cheap is there a reason for this . Wanted one to pull cattle trailer because as high as pickups are mines got to last a long time.
OFFTHEFARM
All the farmers I know say they stay away because the Volvo engine and emissions arent that happy about farm life and the plastic bumpers dont like stubble and ditches very much.

Make sure it comes with the proper ppe. Shorts, flip flops and foot rest on the dash.

Lazy WP
Biggest problem with a truck is the need for a CDL and log book.

jass1660
Cheaper to buy a twin screw and make it a single axle versus a true single axle, single axles command a premium. EGR was the start of emissions in 2004 an older Volvo could have a Cummins or a Detroit as well as a volvo engine.
Farmall1066
I don’t know much about a Volvo, but the guys in my area with them say, they are great trucks when on the road, but when in the shop, you must remember to bring the vaseline!!

Is Volvo software proprietary, special Volvo only tools that require large investment from local shop or can any big truck shop work on them? Have a Volvo dealer reasonably close? We ran into issues with Paccar motor in a KW. What seems cheap on the front end..................... Lessons learned
IHKeith
I’m not a heavy truck expert, but occasionally work on them. I am an accomplished auto mechanic and don’t have much love for Volvos. I put an electric trailer brake controller in a 2016 Volvo VHD64 and was impressed with the truck, the interior looked like a Volvo car but an easily removed panel exposed the underside of the dash and the truck had grommets that were easily pierced to run wires through the firewall and had auxiliary battery positive and ground studs right there on the inside of the firewall, the wiring and fuse block was similar to the materials early 2000s GM pickups used, it was much easier than the same job in a 2006 International Workstar(?) tandem

I agree with everything posted here I don't know your experience with big trucks but you can spend a fortune on servicing/ repairing them. I also don't know how much you will use it but it may be more practical to use your pickup. If you are set on buying a big truck I would look for a pre emissions International ,IMHO they are the most for your money. try to stay away from fleet trucks ( Volvos esp ) that had dozens of drivers once again IMHO. for that reason an older one owner Paccar with a CAT is an awesome choice IMHO. Cdfarabaugh
Volvo engines arent bad (only have experience with 2007 after ones. All my experience is on the Mack side, which is almost fully Volvo-ized now Gripes: rear geartrain, so all the important auxillary driven stuff is stuffed in the back. Chronic injector/cup issues. Idler gear failures in rear geartrain. Engine harnesses are crap (what ones arent anymore?) All engine connectors are wierd European twist lock things. OeM software is premium tech tool, but lots offer it black market anymore. Aftertreatment isnt much different from what anyone else uses. maxxum 140
We have a single axle semi and not to detour you from buying one, but they are rough riding and unless you can lock the rear end they are about worthless in wet grass or a little soft ground. I would stick to the pickup unless you are staying on paved smooth roads

Lessons learned I don’t know anything about a Volvo other than very expensive to repair?! I’m not to impressed by the Paccar engines either, but yet others love them?! I’ll stick with my W900 and kitty cat!
nomorejohndeere
How about a used dually pickup just for occasional use Then you could use it for other stuff if need be.... Or step down from semi to a 2 ton or something
acem
A friend who drives cross country for decades always runs Volvo trucks. He buys them late model, low mileage used and maintaines them. Typically trades them off after a million miles.

That KW we had (T700 w/ 12.9 Paccar, no relation to the W900😄) was like a big old underpowered motor home. The Pete (first year Acert 550 horse), feels more like it was designed by someone who actually spends time behind the wheel.
