2023 crop pics

Recommended Posts

Well things are getting a little sloppy around here again. Had 1.25-1.5 inches of rain the last couple days now. Really need some nice warm weather and semi calm days so we can get spraying and get the crop growing. Was looking back at pics and were sure a long ways behind from last year. Seems early yet but the middle of June is just around the corner already.

Well the forecast just keeps getting uglier. Between the wind and rain there hasn’t been much going on. With almost freezing temps at night and next to no sunlight the crops are progressing very slowly.  Yesterday was the first somewhat nice day we’ve had in a while. Wasn’t all that warm but the wind finally died down. Rain started back up at about 11:00 this morning and it’s been coming down steady ever since. Little over a inch now again. Friends further south said nearly 2 inches.

Took off yesterday afternoon for a little quad ride. Was going to head up into the bush but got to the bridge and found it wad falling in. Rm has been doing a little bit of work to it but I think it’s beyond their capacity to fix properly.  Kind of bad as there’s a community well there that some people still rely on.  Came back through the bush and around to our north quarter. Stopped and talked to the one neighbor on the road a bit that owns the quarter just in between ours and the forest. Just nicely got done saying I hadn’t seen any wolves there for a while and proceeded to drive north to ours where I found these tracks fresh overtop of his truck tracks. Sure looks like a bigger wolf to me.  Looked as though it was chasing something the way it had dig and spread the sand. Not all the tracks were clear but they were all big.

@midnightman @db1486 hope all is well over there with you guys today. Looked like the storms were mostly south of you so hopefully that was the case.  Saw videos of some smaller tornados floating around.

Just more rain here today so far. Not a lot but enough to hold up spraying as it looks like it could start any minute again.  Brother in law at humboldt had some hail and heavy downpours today. They’ve got water running in the ditches again.

Little bit of rows finally showing up in the canola. It’s horribly slow though. Wheat is where I brushcut a couple years ago.  Dried out enough I could seed the whole thing this spring. Clouds are still somewhat threatening rain. Been moving around us all day. Fields are dry enough that the neighbor is still seeding though.

Your crops look fine to me. I'm actually surprised how well they are progressing here considering how below normal the temps have been. So windy that there were only a couple of days fit to spray in the past week and no sign of that changing anytime soon. Lucky the weeds are not too terrible yet.

Wolves eh? None here but my brother and SIL did see a bear right beside one of my fields so that is a new visitor for us.

This video from last night is mostly driving but I did stop for a few close up shots of my last seeded field of canola.

It’s supposed to get to 94* F here today. It is very humid with a hot wind.

I can’t take heat like that with humidity on top of it. Least the breeze would keep the air moving. Dead calm like that I’d be dead lol.

it’s coming but we’re sure behind where we were last year at this time. Crops are growing really slow with the cooler temps and cloudy days. Somewhat nice out today but there’s clouds moving in again. Been sunny all morning though which is nice for a change.

Got a little bit of spraying down in between the rains. Was hoping to get more done today then I did but midnight last night we had a heavy rain come through. Enough to make everything soaked this morning again. By mid afternoon things were drying up not to bad again. My brother and sister stopped by for a bit today so I didn’t get out to the field as early as I should’ve.  Took off with my brother for a couple hours this afternoon. Took dad up to the bush on the quad for a little ride and cooked a few hot dogs. Calling for more rain tonight/tomorrow again unfortunately.

Well Sunday was a day of rain again. Started early in the morning and kept on till about 2:30 or so. Over another inch came down. Figured it’d be a few days before I could get back in the fields again. Went out at about 11:00 and surprising drove around in the fields without picking up much mud on the quad so I went home and mixed up a tank. Sprayed out ok so I kept on going. Just the reserve and one 1/4 of canola left now. Hopefully get the reserve done tomorrow if the weather cooperates. No rush with the last 1/4 of canola. It’s really clean yet so I’ll probably do it in another week to 10 days. Might have to do the rest of the canola again by then anyways if the liberty doesn’t kill everything.

Frost at the lakes just north of here last night apparently. Was a post on Facebook this morning of this fellow scratching the date into the window.  Saying a chance of frost tonight again too. Need some heat here awfully soon. Crops are falling behind. They’re still growing but very slowly.

Ended up floating on the last of the canola seed just to get it on, but it looks like it’s germinated well. Forecast looks better after Tuesday. We really could use some warmer temperatures here.

Was talking with my sister on snap chat and she said carrot river which is about 60 miles east of us got 3 inches of rain yesterday. Everything is saturated there now.  Somewhat flat land too so the water lays there.

Risk of frost in central AB tonight, hope they're wrong, had a guy on the news around Leduc that was standing in front of a nice crop and saying everything is perfect but that's not what I'm seeing everywhere I go

we ended up with a inch and a half of moisture here very welcomed just need some heat to really move things along i got canola looking really good to crap but its coming, was back to spraying already so the moisture soaked right in, 1 more tank on canola then on to wheat acres, not a whole lot out there to spray either since we got really good control in burn off

calling for down to plus 4 tonight so hopefully things will be ok yet

It's about as good as it can be here lol. Tornados have stayed south a ways, but had enough storms already. And 70-80 km winds yesterday. And it's wet here. If we still had crop to put in I'd have to get some rice lol. Rains every day, and windy. Gotta get spraying this week if it quits raining someday. I think I seen dust 1 or 2 days of all of seeding this year. Lots of unseeded acres around here this spring. Sounds like most guys are pulling the pin now. Getting too late and need a few nice days just to get back in the fields. I'd say we're almost as wet as 2022. Only difference is this year the snow was melted before May and it was actually too dry before seeding. Although I only had to unhook once this year, so I guess it wasn't too bad at all 😂

I think I used the wipers almost every day at some point, and had the heat on in the tractor every day except 1. Was definitely a cool wet spring. Our wheat took all of 14 days to come out of the ground, but anything seeded after the snow was out within a week. Canola was all out in about 3-4 days and growing like crazy. Ground still isn't overly warm but it's growing.

Had a frost like that a week ago here. Didn't hurt anything but was sure thick enough on some stuff. Woulda been nice if it hurt the burdock at least 😂

Well we did get frost last night and calling for risk again tonight, need any sun and heat available but they are already spraying chemtrails this morning to cloud things over 🤷‍♂️

Got up about 5:00 and there was frost ontop the trucks here too. Anywhere the sun was out it was melting it already so didn’t bother to get a picture. Enough you could scrape it off the metal. Glass didn’t seem to be as bad.  Just got another tank mixed up now and waiting on the sprayer to warm up.  Not ideal conditions that’s for sure. Still chilly out. Sprayer has really heavy weight hyd oil and it wasn’t happy about starting. I shouldn’t have to plug the sprayer in to go incrop spraying lol.

Well managed to get the reserve all done without any issues. Was very wet over there though. Only 9 miles from home but it’s right on the riverbank. Had a couple little showers come through today so hopefully the spray is fine. Just fine mists for the most part.  Sprayed through a lot of standing water where I’d seeded. Fields are relatively hard though so I didn’t struggle with it to badly. Sprayer needs a wash now though. Wasn’t bad till I went back over one spot when I had extra chemical left. Going back through the previous ruts it sprayed up on the rims.  Took a few screenshots from some video I took today.  Just the one quarter of canola left now but that can wait for warmer weather. Liberty doesn’t work great when it’s cold and cloudy out. Very slow acting and probably not as potent.

My hay crop was not worth a picture, 50 percent or less. Ignorant, cold spring. 6 killing frosts in May. Just had another one, June 17, 26f. Pretty tough on grass and alfalfa.

Things are slowly progressing. Canola is behind the worst. Still have 1 quarter left to spray. Thinking about doing it tomorrow maybe. See what happens I guess. No real rush with it yet.  Was out crop checking tonight again and saw lots of wildlife out. Moma bear and 2 Cubs on our north quarter. I think it’s the same one that had 4 Cubs earlier so thinking she may have lost 2. Way home I had 5 elk run out of the bush next to me and off into the field.  Wheat is looking fairly decent. Even on the sand it’s filled in pretty good. Maybe make something there yet if we keep getting a little bit of moisture every now and then.  Few storm rolled around us today but we didn’t get anything here at all. Looked ugly for a while though.

Had a couple pretty good storms skirt by us on either side last night. No hail or rain to really speak of here but a pile of lightning and some ugly looking clouds. You can see that shelf cloud show up on the radar even with the rain intensity.

Just looking at pics of the storm that went through carrot river last night. They’re thinking a tornado may have gone through but no confirmation yet. Same storm that passed just north of us last night. Lots of damage around town there anyways. Doesn’t sound like anyone hurt at least though.
