Rice is very hard to thresh. It's almost impossible to remove the grain with a std grain rotor (IH) or rasp bars (conventional) without damage the rice. The rice rotor was better but the specialty rotor made the axial flow thresh. The grain rotor was designed to be gentle on grain so I'm told.

IH was a strong seller in the southern rice combine market. The 915 was a great rice combine. In fact it was still produced into 1979 until the rice special combines came out.  The 915 rice special had a little more capacity in rice until the specialty rotor came out.

I don't know what happened to Massey  combines but they disappeared quickly in the early 80s round here. Gleaner was quick on their tails.

I realize y'all grow wheat over the summer but the talk of green wheat is hard for me to get in my head. It dries down easily in our hot late spring weather.

Quality on spring wheat is everything. So you want it off as fast as you can. The later Aug weather up here days get shorter so the wheat stems stay green. I would imagine rice is tough on everything. What kind of cylinder did a 915 rice run.? Maybe a spike tooth?  Ran many hours on a 915. Toughest thing I combined with it was durum this time year for a neighbor it was running well over 50 bpa for the time back then and was green stemmed. 2 acres an hour or less I was covering. Took me a long time to do 36 acres.

The old green gal had to quit early tonite. Lower feeder belt came apart. The auger was slowing down last night. So this morning looked over combine and seen belt was really loose. So I had to hook up variable pulley hose and close the sheaves. After many years of oil holding them it must have all dripped out. The idler pulley had a rib breaking off letting belt work out. So I turned idler around and it worked for 4 hours but top of belt wore away and stopped header auger from turning. Have about 100 acres left but it was coming up into some green. Would have liked to get another 15 acres done but wasn’t meant to be.

We never really had trouble with green straw until spraying fungicide on the wheat became mainstream. It happens with the corn and soybeans too. The grain dries out, but the plant just won’t dry out.

Yes spike tooth cylinder and concave.

It's difficult to get all the rice loose from the panicale (head). But if you close the space too close you break the grains of rice. Most rice is cooked and eaten as complete grains of rice (with the bran removed) so grain quality is extremely important. The specialty rotor does a great job with the multiple passes.

2588 have the common rail inj system and injectors are speedy. The last year 2388 were the 2588 with old style injection. Except for some late 2388s had the 2588 engine. They ran into it in local dealer here ordered a reman for a late 2388 had a hard time getting right engine. I keep doors closed just because the wind is wrong both days. I can remember when a swamp cooler on a combine was considered state of the art.

I only bring up the 2588 because a neighbor of mine is getting out of farming and he has one that will be sold.

Exactly true. That is when everybody started to preharvest roundup.

My wife would murder me if I spent 40 to 50,000 on a combine right now.  Our 8820 was sold new in Montana some place. My brother was working at a credit union and financed for a farmer that really didn’t owe any money . It was very low hours like 600 when this guy bought it and I think when we bought it was 6000. It has 6650 hours on it now.  Being it was from Montana it was a wheat or grain special setup. It has large rectangular holes in walkers instead of hooded slots. And the rear beater speed is a lot faster. This doesn’t bother any at all until you get into  soybeans. They have to be very ripe or the straw will drop through walkers and wrap augers under neath. This makes you want to cry trying to clean them.

Well few more Smokey days here again. Was really bad for a couple days. Today it cleared up real nice for a change.  Had a little set back tonight while combining though. Got out of the combine and could hear wheat raining down. First thought it was the overfull hopper but not so lucky. Found a hole in the hopper under the unload cross auger.  Not sure if it was plugged up with dirt before and started to leak or if it’s new.  Pretty sure it wasn’t that big before so thinking something broke through but don’t know for sure. Have to rig up some kind of patch tomorrow I guess and look for a liner kit later on again. Couple options in the states but haven’t found anything locally at all.  Wheat is about half done now. Barley is basically all done. Have about 4 acres left that I need to swath yet. Canola is all swathed except for what I sprayed so hopefully it will be ready by next Monday. That will be 2 weeks. Stuff at home would likely go by the end of the week but don’t want to push it either. Little rain wouldn’t hurt. Talking a slight chance tomorrow but nothing for sure. Wheats running decent for the year. Seems to be around that 50-60 bpa. Considering our best average is 71 I’m happy with that. Barley was only about 65. Grade isn’t great but it should make a #3 yet. Haven’t hauled any in yet. It’s not quite dry either but it will keep for a while anyways. Coming off around 15-16.

Was unloading the semi this afternoon and heard this awful racket. Thought something was coming apart on the auger for a second lol. Quickly realized it was the spray plane going across the road. Got out in time to see him buzz the church and make a couple more passes.

harvest mostly done here just some canola and barley left

that sucks it wore throu but its not the first on I've seen I've all kinds of fixes from duct tape to bent tin to a 2x4 wedged in there to spray foam, if your planning to keep the combines i think the liner kit is the way to go, i dont think its a hard job installing but could be time consuming

Well the cereals are all done now. Finished up the last little patches of barley this afternoon. Spent the later part of the afternoon going over the combine and servicing it. It needed a oil change a few little things addressed.  Hopefully get going on canola tomorrow and maybe make up some lost time if things go smoothly. Shouldn’t have to haul any more grain into the elevator so that frees up a few hours of the day.  Water pump went out on the combine the other day so had to run to Melfort late afternoon and grab one. Easy repair at least.  Not quite half done yet. After tomorrow maybe, depends how the day goes.

Finally got the combine in the field yesterday and put in a long afternoon with the 7721 and Magnum. Looks like it gets a rest today as its cloudy and damp with showers forecast for the day. Wheat yielding ok and reasonable quality. It was only swathed last Thursday so was still testing over 15% when I started yesterday.

Well we’re on the home stretch now. Close to 3/4 done. Going to straight cut my canola that I sprayed a whole back tomorrow. Had a look at it tonight and it’s good a ripe now. Some is actually way to dry I’m afraid but it is what it is. Actually wouldn’t feel bad if it rained a little bit overnight or tomorrow morning. Could use a break anyways lol.   Canola On our north quarter yielded pretty good.  It almost averaged 55. Just a little bit short. Still the best we’ve ever had regardless though. Ironically on our poorest quarter lol. It’s not as bad on that side of the field but still has a fair bit of sand running through it so it just shows how much yield we could’ve had at home if we’d had the rain when we needed it. It’s not quite all done yet so not positive what the yield will be but thinking in the 45-50 range.  Mines up in the air yet. Hoping to get surprised in a good way as the other canola yielded a little better then I thought it would so hopefully that trend continues.  I wouldn’t complain if I ran out of bin space. Lol.

Found some more rice growing in my county. The laotion lady was nice but didn't know much English. She's growing laotion sticky rice in a big garden.

That reminded me of an article you might be interested in. Rice grown in WI & it's not too far from here. They had a couple ladies from Laos helping out. Had a fancy Japanese mini combine too.

Haven't followed up on rice growing since the article was written. Will do that when there's some time.

I’m always amazed at how polished the augers in heads become in grain country. Soybeans just do not polish them like that. The floors in the auger heads will wear through and have holes in them before they ever look like that.

Doesn’t take long to shine them up that’s for sure. Floor on that header is in pretty rough shape though in a couple spots. Should be replaced but I’d like to find a newer platform with pickup to replace the whole thing.

Morning started out looking rough. Drove the combine to the field and had rain drops on the window. Thankfully the stuff that the radar showed this morning missed us. Managed to go till about 5:00 and the rain finally caught up with me. Had it come by within a mile or so a couple times but managed to keep going. Last time it opened up and poured down for a minute or two.  I was trying to fill up the hopper and was off back on a small field doing the first round. Unfortunately didn’t get back to my opening cut before I wrapped up the pea auger with straw. Hopper was full by then anyways but I had to backtrack back to the road. Felt different to be siting at the table at supper time lol.

Finally started cutting. Got one bob truck load cut and hauled up before dark. Hope to get something done tomorrow.

No yield monitor but it's yielding good.

I bet that downed spot will be fun. It’d be scary to me to lower the header into that!

Down rice is bad.

I'll cut all the standing rice that's ready before I start the down rice. It's just to easy to tear something up on the combine.

Maybe I can get the 1480 working to cut it. It's got some problems but it takes the slugs so much better than the 1460. The bigger rotor helps.

If I do I'll get a pic of the 1480 with the 16.5 ft header!

I put one of those kits in my 1460 a few years ago. Pricy and hard to install but very good when complete.
