Rusty shackleford
I am going through my farmall 544s brakes and I notice it is shimmed, both sides didn't match for how many shims it has, could somone please explain how I should shim it? Each side has 2 spots that need swimming, inside and outside.
snoshoe
Inside shims are for differential carrier bearings and ring and pinion lash. Do not change. Outer shims. Back off adjusters and remove as many shims as you can without causing brakes to drag. Then use adjusters to even pedals.

The inside shims just affect how far out the housing is so it adjust the inside disc brakes, there is no bearing on that part just an o ring and seal

They do shim a bearing. Right now I can not shake the fog. It is either as I said or just bull pinion bearing. Anyway I advise not to change.
snoshoe
Pretty sure it is bull pinion bearing. Does that housing not butt up to outer race?
snoshoe
O k I've got it now. If you were leaking oil there. You probably should go through the procedure to check the play in the shaft. I could recite the procedure but can't quote any of the specs.

Jeff-C-IL
Shims behind the "pinion cage" (the part still in tractor in your picture) set Differential bearing end play. The inner shims you are talking about (behind the brake housing) set the bull pinion bearing end play. Don't change to change brakes The outer shims set the brake clearance.
