Tractor of the week. Week 13: 826

Recommended Posts

I got to run an 826 one time in my life for a while when we were visiting some friends near Lansing, MI. Their neighbors were baling hay, small square bales, and I couldn’t resist walking across the road to check things out close up. The folks were very friendly to talk to, and I rode on the fender with the guy doing the baling with a 1066 open station. I told him I was quite familiar with running IHs of this vintage.

His wife was running hay wagons back and forth to their farm down the road, and I asked the guy about the 826 and if he thought his wife would mind me driving the 826 for a couple of trips to their farm. He laughed and said she wouldn’t mind one bit. So I hopped on the 826 with her and we were going to their farm, she let me drive, she rode on the fender. They had a couple teen  kids back at the farm unloading wagons, so I pulled around to where she showed me and we traded our two full wagons for a pair of empties lol. She sent me back to the field while she stayed at the farm, she said have fun. (Oh h_ll yeah! lol)

I made two more trips for them before I had to rejoin our friends that we were visiting. The guy asked me what do I owe you, I said are you kidding me not a dime. Lol. Their equipment was in really nice GQ condition too.

That was my introduction to the 826. Stupid me I should have took pics. I fell in love with that 826, for what I was doing anyway, just pulling a pair of hay wagons. No hot rodding it, just taking things carefully and easily.

Their 826 was a Diesel, and a gear drive w/TA.

That 1066 they were baling with was a beauty too. Some people just take care of and take pride in their equipment, just like I used to. Lol.

So big question here for the 826 experts- Did 826s also come with gasoline engines, or were they all strictly Diesels? If they also came as gassers, did they ever manufacture any Hydros with gasoline engines?

Rick, here is a pic of a 826 LP Hydro. l think it belongs to a member here but maybe he belongs to the IH group on FB.  Seems like it is one of only one ever built....?  maybe whoever it belongs to will chime in and have more info about it.

I have a tired 826 that still wears a loader and puts in an honest day's work.  Have slowly been bringing it back after it spent a large chunk of its life working a local cattle yard and didn't get the best attention.  No idea how many hours, but still runs well.

I worked for a small seed company while in college.  The owner who also farmed had an 826 diesel gear drive.  Mainly it was used to run augers filling bins in the fall, but I also used it with an Almaco 4 row mounted planter to plant plots.

Picture of my 826 Hydro. Was originally my maternal grandfathers. I painted it the year he passed.

This is one of 2 that I am aware of. I have photos of the other one on my digital camera.

My 826 when I first purchased it.

A photo I was excited to take.  My friend Bob and I photographed our 826 hydro diesels together.   They are exactly 100 serial numbers apart!

This is our 826. To the best of our knowledge has around 17k hours, started out new 8 miles away. It has been ours for around 40 years. It sat with engine issues for 15 years or so, got a new lease on life and is our spraying tractor now. She really cruises with the new tires. Pic is my 80 year old dad driving it last spring for the first time in over 20 years.

Anybody here ever use the weight transfer hitch?  I remember that Deere used to market one also, and probably other companies.

I always thought they looked like a good idea, but I've never seen one.

I had an 826. I sold it when I bought another tractor, many times I thought it'd be fun to have back even though it didn't really have a job. I took the German motor out and put an Ag 360 in it and had found a factory turbo manifold for it. It was a sweet running tractor that had a little different sound. I had it set around 150hp but I can't remember a time I ever used near that much. It didn't have enough traction for that and I didn't put duals on it.

We had one. Sold it back in 96 on our sale.  Brought $575. Never used it much. Dad got it from Custer's.   One of my Uncles "finds".
