766 Man
ย Farming was so bad along with an inability to find financing during the early 1980's that few 5X88 tractors were sold new around here.ย I can think of one MFWD 5488 that a vegetable grower bought.ย His business at the time was well insulated from the grain and dairy markets which were suffering.ย Anyways, an interesting tractor that deserved a chance in better economic times.ย ย
acem
I wanted a 5488 since I first saw one new on the dealers lot. Iย finally traded my 1456 for it a few years ago. Here's what I hope for it to look like soon. ย
Farming Enthusiast
Reliable, fuel efficient, comfortable and powerful. And nipping on the heals of the 1206 as best looking tractor ever produced. I've said it before but there's nothing else I'd rather spend a day in the field in. I haven't driven a 15 or 14 but has considerably more "junk in the trunk" than a 10 or 12
Dzldenny
I've always wanted one. I remember watching them chop corn at farm progress days when these came out. Every tractor roared by. The 50 series went by and all you heard was the knives of the chopper grinding up the corn. So smooth and quiet. I just can't justify buying one just to have one...yet. Maybe someday.

Here's a few pics I've stolen from the Facebook group of some of the prototypes This one is supposedly the 17th MFD from the end. I don't think you can overstate how impressive it is to lead the class in power and fuel efficiency! As well as a testimate for how great that engine is. I don't know why but IH never tested their FWA tractors in Nebraska that I've found.
Farming Enthusiast
What ever happened to the forward air flow design? It's never been tried since then. I know the bearings on the fan shaft that goes through the radiator go out but I would think upgrades could ย help with that. I personally think it works well
EquipmentJunkie
The 5488 is one of the first IH tractors that I was ever around close-up.ย My father would often help my uncle when it was time to clean out his chicken house.ย My uncle's neighbor provided the equipment and the manure was hauled on his land.ย I got to ride along!ย The neighbor originally had a Deere 4440 which was a little light for that largeย spreader full of that heavy, sticky manure.ย Then, the neighbor upgraded to a 5488.ย Wow!ย Despite my Deere tendencies at the time, I was very impressed with the 5488.ย My young mind thought that Deere better do something fast because IH really had it together with those tractors.

For sure from a collectability stand point. No offense to the Cummins though
FarmerFixEmUp
ย Bought this one about 6 years ago out of Williston ND sight unseen except pictures. Had it trucked down and March 1 2017 is when I first saw it in person. 8800 hours and don't know much about it other than it was a yard tractor at a grain farm. Has dual PTO. Put it on my dyno when I got it home and shows 240 HP.ย Rear tires have been replaced with Titan radials. Had no dual or hubs or weight bracket or top link when I bought it so all was added. Paint was buffed and new decals and a few years later a new cab interior. ย ย This is my middle son and one of his senior pictures. ย ย

I don't know.ย The frame rails on a Magnum are quite similar but the hole spacing could be different for engine mounting. I've never compared the two with a measuring device.
superih
My little animal, there is an old post of when I went through the tractor, maxed out pump, S2E, doesn't give a $hit what's hooked behind it and burns less fuel than anything else it's size. ย 14
IHhogfarmer
Iโve been waiting to share this first picโฆ.. From the 1983 IH Axial-Flow Productivity Guide.ย February 2020 I saw this for sale about an hour from me. Believe it was a late 1983 model ย Canโt leave out the last tractor to roll off the Rock Island Farmall Plant line on May 14th, 1985. I saw this at the CaseIH booth at National FFA Convention in October 2017.ย ย
bitty
Our first 88 is a 5488 we got last fall, we have a 5288 that we got right after that before I ever drove one ever . Both of our 88's need paint bad but are exceptionally straight and rust free . I hope to get it close to as nice looking as some of these already pictured. Both are 2 wheel drive . ย .....note that I pilfered someone else's 5488 picture from this site to remember what I would love to get ours like.ย
