Proud Dad moment

My 18 year old daughter called tonite. She asked black goes to black and to the positive. I replied no black goes to black and to the negative. Red goes to red and the positive terminals. A friend of hers at college needed a jump start. They were worried about calling for help my daughter said she would take care of it for them. Another friend had a set of jumper cables so they boosted the car and got it going. I will add it is 10 below zero in Bismarck where they are at. She told my wife later, Dad and uncle Brian are always boosting something to start it or changing flat tires when I am with them. Apparently she learned an important life skill.

I hope my daughter would do the same, but I'm afraid that mechanical things just kinda aren't her thing. Good thing her 2 brothers are close to her. And yes, I can confirm it was 10 below in Bismarck today. Colder now. I live near there and drive through Bismarck every day on my way to work.

They all attend Bismarck state college. She has found a group of nice friends there.

When my daughter got her first car she learned to change a tire and check the oil. Also got a small set of tools and jumper cables with lessons on each. She still has and uses her tools 👍

My daughter built her own house using power tools that I showed her how to use. She can run my tractors when need to and this Summer she'll be running the brush hog on her trails.

Simple skills like righty-tighty along with red positive, black negative go a long way. My daughter will change her own oil but always asks for supervision. I'm OK with that. She knows where to position the lift and how to drain, change filter, etc. She watches when I do brakes and such. I've never made her change a tire as her car has neither jack nor spare, just run flat tires. I don't know why BMW does that but they do,

Before we were married I talked my wife through getting a furnace going over the phone and I've been able to do that for lots of things. When we were dating her car needed the tires rotated and I made her do it. She carries jumper cables and has got lots of people going with the simple red to positive etc.

Great that you taught your daughter how to jump start. It is a confidence builder that will help her with other tasks. Congrats!

The fact that the lines of communication are open and she views Dad as a valuable resource means you did your job raising her well

Good deal, my wife had to learn this stuff to drive, i credit her father for seeing it through, although some things he left for me to teach because they tended to butt heads😂 i hope to teach those skills to my daughter.

I never rely on the color of the terminal or wire. I've taught them to go positive to positive. The plus sign to the plus sign. Negative (minus) to negative or ground to ground. We drive used cars that may have been subjected to all sorts of butchery before we bought them. Multiple battery cables of the same color included.

Kudos for having the patience to pass on the info. It is a virtue not everyone has.

I have a daughter who is great at teaching kindergarteners .  Other stuff seems to come a little harder .  When the kids got their first car they got a tool kit.  when she was 18 she was about 200 miles from home her alternator went out she changed it out in a drive way . She is now 45 and still carries her tool kit and jumper cables has helped out countless friends but she did hang out watching dad work in the shop.

Mine is 19 and at college in WI.  Got her a Li battery jump pack that she knows how to use... and has helped others.   Son did the same thing at school.  Like many above have said, tool kits and cables with their first car....they both do pretty well.

One of my sons goes to BSC and works part time. My other one went for a year and decided to go to work full time and do on the job training. They both work for the same company as I do but in different dealerships.

You did good. Anymore people have become so helpless. It sure does make me appreciate my upbringing helping out working on junk, building and fixing also lots of construction/carpentry work. We didn't learn how to do things because we wanted to but because we had to

I have 3 daughters, all grown now with family's of their own.

They had to learn to drive a stick, change a tire, and do a jump start BEFORE they got a license.

Years ago my girlfriend called me for a boost, I was only 10 minutes away so I said I am on my way, she had her own booster cables in the car, when I arrived there was another guy going to boost her, but she stopped him when he was going to reverse the negative and the positive, at least she was smart enough to stop him… he was sure that that was the way to do it! I said thanks but no thanks and pulled out my 25 foot booster cables and I was able to boost her with my truck when I was parked behind her. On the way home we picked up a new battery and changed it when I got home.

Both my son and daughter's first cars were sticks; my son still has a stick BMW and when either my daughter or wife drives it they remark how much fun it is.

I don't get the appeal of self driving cars but then again I don't get why people board a plane and immediately pull the shades down. Don't they want to see what's going on?
