jimw
Just wondering if anyone now’s anything about these
Sledgehammer
Not sure of the maker but there would have been a vise made into it (missing). There are several variations of that setup similar to the picture below. Anvil portion is hollow to allow for vise workings. I’m sure it could be used but would be much more likely to crack with hard use.
supermechanic
Agree with vise. Movable jaw likely pivoted at bored hole at left of picture. Would not recommend pounding on it.

Would not recommend pounding on it. Possibly. Or it had a slide like a regular vise. I've seen both types. Agree, no heavy pounding.

yellowrosefarm
Both of those are over on the vise thread
supermechanic
I really like that design. it shows economy of materials, and minimum of close tolerance machined parts.

Farmer B
I think i have the twin to that one, never knew it would have been a vise. Learn something everyday. Brian
oldiron user
This weird anvil has been around all my life, just thought it was some low quality hollow anvil. So now I know the rest of the story. Jaw must have broke off, and around here nothing gets thrown away. Especially anything resembling an anvil.
12_Guy
I can’t recall what these anvil/vises were intended to be used for. I don’t think ferrier is right but I do think they were intended to be a portable, lightweight, traveling tool.
Diesel Doctor
Didn't leather workers use a form of an anvil?
12_Guy
There was a “harness makers” anvil that had dimples in the top to set rivets.
