Diesel Doctor
In my opinion, the 856 was one of the top tractors of the IH line. The diesel would run forever on little fuel and had few breakdowns. It just seemed like the best package for that horse power. It was just a very handy piece of equipment. The big brother, the 1456 was second for me.

IHRedRyan
still on the hunt for grandpa’s - no serial # … Sold it Before my time. Seen here when grandma decided it was time to update to a walk in shower - bye bye bathtub! if I do have any chance of finding it , the yellow Ezee On Loader isn’t very common. Also has headlights on the side of hood - I guess it was born a cab tractor. the guy he sold it to has passed on , his buddy remembers it going to an auction lot , they have no record of it , I’ve been to the depths of the internet looking for it. maybe it’ll pop up some day

But what I see, and I’d watch for this, more than the loader, it has 66 series fenders on it. I hope you can find it!! The 856 I grew up on, was sold on our restructuring auction in 1999. I knew the location it went too, but after he sold it, I lost track of it. Started hauling grain for a guy that had it, and after a few years, he was done with it, mainly cause low range issues. So I got it back April of 2020! Here is a before bath, and after bath picture. I need to get some better pictures of it!

Little Red
856 is dang good tractor, grew up on one, grandpa bought 856 custom new in 67 or 68. Dad’s still got it, had a picture of it on my old phone but lost picture when my phone died, I’ll have to try to get a picture of it next time I’m over there. It has a pile of hours on it, never been overhauled.

You are spot on with 966 vs 856, we had both. 966 was on blower duty while filling silo 856 was pulling wagons just because the 856 had 38 inch tire vs the 9 having 34s so the 856 would go a bit faster on the 4 mile trip from field to silo. When blower would plug, it would kill the 966 if you didn’t shut pto off in time. For some reason we put the 856 on the blower and plugged the blower, the engine grunted a little and then sheared the shear bolts. You guys talking about the 766 all the time kinda makes me want to go find one!

IHKeith
This is my Great Uncles' 856, these Uncles ran a farm together for 40 years or more, farmed together as brothers their whole lives, one has passed and the other is long retired and over 90 years old, as long as I have been around they live(d) at the next door farm and the one next to that, they grew up in the house I live in, these pics are taken at my place, my cousin who grew up with the 856 still uses it to farm I'm not sure on all the history of Uncle Jimmy and Uncle David's equipment, but a Case 400 was one of there first big tractors, then a 756, 1969 model, they bought it new or almost new, the 856 came along years later, to lessen the load on the 756, the 756 looks almost just like the 856 except it has 34" rear tires and original fenders with the Year A Round cab, the 756 has been on light duty work only for years, I don't know all the specifics but it can make some concerning noises from the transmission/diff, the 856 has still done a ton of work, but I'd guess 60% of the hours of the 756, the great blizzard of 77? (I'm an '85 model so I wasn't there) around that time in a year or two Uncle David wore out a new snowblower, as the story goes, I don't know which 56 series tractor was being used for that but maybe that contributed to the 756's high hour count, he was one of the first "contractors" blowing snow for people who couldn't move their own, before the days of compact tractors and pull behind blowers, when our few miles out of town was remote and less popular to populate, I'd bet he happened into that enterprise in passing to log or collect sap Uncle Jimmy and Dave wore out a 756, worked it hard, got an 856, worked it hard enough too, their tillage equipment was as big as you want with an 856, they have a 5 furrow Overum plow, 18? foot 45 vibra shank cultivator, similar size Bush Hog disc, not the cutting edge of today's technology and practices but in good going the 856 could pull that 18 feet and in tougher/muddy conditions might have the wings up, they never got bigger equipment then what an 856 could handle, as other tractors came up for sale they bought them to compliment their fleet, they bought my Gramp's 1130 Massey in the late 80's, it was a good performer, the 1130 was cranked up as high as 160 horse in it's time, they had it for 15 years or so, when the crown and pinion went in the 1130 they opted not to fix it and we parted it out, around 2001, installed the engine in an 1105 and it was putting out 138 on the PTO, they also bought a used 1070 Case in the early 90s that didn't outlast or outperform the 856 This one has definitely been a good tractor
DaveinSD
This is my 856 several years ago with the tiller hooked up, vast overkill but did an awesome job on the garden. This was my main tractor for many years, since I bought the 5088, it spends most of its time on the baler, light tillage, and pulling the drill. Great tractor, the diesel is super on fuel and has way more power than the neighbor’s similarly sized Deere. Still one of my favorites, and I still enjoy baling with it despite being loud and having not much of a cab.
