Tractor of the week: Week 6. 856

Recommended Posts

Welp, today I learned that gas 856's existed... I learn something new every day. I've always preferred gas to diesel whenever I could find them, whether in trucks or tractors. Thank you for sharing.

I'm kind of surprised as to the number of 856 gas tractors sold in this region.  Sold new as they had area dealer stickers on them.  A few years ago it seemed like there was an 856 turning up at an auction every month.  Now I don't see any.  Things always happen in bunches it seems.

Strangely enough, not many tractors that size sold around here at all. Mostly 656 size and down, due to the small size of most of the farms. The really big operators (very few) had a 9 or 1066, but mostly the 806 was the "big time" operator tractor. Which doesn't really make sense, given our very hilly terrain. I'd think the extra power of the big units would've been more desirable.

Around here most farms were looking for a tractor to pull a 5 bottom plow.  A lot of 856 and 966 tractors sold.  By 1980 the sky was the limit.  In the hill country a new 656 would have been typical.

Aaron, how does the gas compare to the diesels? I'm sure it uses a fair amount more fuel, how does the power compare?

who ever would have thought that a gas would run cheaper per hour than a diesel, todays screwy fuel prices.

Thirsty if you are working them.  Only 10 more cubic inches than the 756 gas.  I am thinking 15 horsepower less than the stock diesel.  Most diesels are turned up.....

Nice for winter weather when you need them to start. Mine spent most of its life wearing a loader.

My 856 custom that I bought from a widow 1 mile away. It had a factory turbo set up put on it many, many years ago. I did alot of little things to it to make it as close to original as possible. Has a chip on the reverse gear that needs to get replaced next winter.

In tough going, would an 856 run with a 966 or even a 986?

Yes on the 966, for years worked with our neighbor with dads 856 & their 966. I prefered dads 8 over their 9. Don't know on the 986, the 436 may have had a little more than the 856.

A 856 propane in very nice shape was sitting in the shed of collectible tractors at Anamoose ND about 10 years ago. It had a dealer sticker from Kansas I think if I remember right. Hadn’t seen it after that though.

If it was at Peet's ,,,,maybe S. Knight has it as he bought a lot of Petes stock?

Alright.....who's has one of these I could bring home?

I know where this is! I actually almost bought it, but turned the current owner on to it, and he was happy as h*ll when he got it delivered!
I told him, if the day ever comes, that he needs to get rid of it, let me know!!

Yes that’s where it was in a building. Half the building was parts storage other half had tractors stored away.
