Got the other 16.9 mounted today, apparently, I pinched the tube, again. At least this is a different tire. Ran out of time so it will have to be looked at tomorrow. Took a picture of the new tire next to the old one.

I had a support piece welded to the rear.  Dad wound an electric fence post into the spools and broke it!

I always think back to the patience my parents gave me when I was younger BUT there is a reversal of the guard when they do stuff that is sometimes beyond belief, leaves room for payback on the balance scales

My guess is the disc is rejecting the green bolt. Trying to lose it anyway it can.

Still spreading dry.  Wind came up so I switched to field cultivator then I did a little harrowgator work.

Finished disking/harrowing the field I was working on two days ago and got the grain drill moved/prepped to go.

Hooked up and dropping it in.

Stopped just in time to reload!

Planted 10 acres of oats and 8 acres of oats/grass mix. Plus a little strip of alfalfa. The 10 will be alfalfa next year so needed to square things up. The field is 40 acres all together.  I’ve planted the other part back to grass last year.  Need to finish harrowing that to knock down the mole mounds.

Finished the day by rolling the 8 acres with the A.

One step forward, and one broken packer wheel back!  As you can see, the wheel centers are pretty much wore past use but it got the job done.

That looks good Matt! So after you drill your oats, you follow them with a packer. Would a spike harrow have the same effect?

Thanks!  I rolled the area I planted grass over the oats. The grass seed box on the front of the drill just dribbles in front of the disks. The disks cut furrows for the grain out of the main box. So the grass seed is in theory on top of the soil. I do mix some grass seed in the grain box because the grass seeder won’t put down the desired amount even when opened completely.  About 2 lbs short according to the chart.  Seems to work good to roll it afterwards.

When I plant just oats, there are some individual drag chains with loops behind the disk openers. I also hook a couple chains slacked across the drill sideways so they drag the furrows closed. I have pretty loose sandy soil out here so there is plenty of soil on top of the oats with this method. The oats doesn’t seem to be too picky, packed or not. Always comes up. And saves another pass over the field to harrow it in.  Gary Yeager (Old Binder Guy) drags a wire fence panel behind his grain drill.

I had good timing with planting. This morning at 6 am a good sized rain cell rolled over the field and wet it down. Perfect!

So what was the reason for going to the taller size?  My 400 has 14.9s like yours did. I’ve heard that size is hard to find but haven’t looked either. I like the increased footprint and I’ll bet it scoots down the road!

Mostly just that I like bigger tires. Eventually they will be back on the 450 and the 14.9's will be on here. The 16.9's just exude cool! Kind of wish I would have just bought another pair of them.
