The rest was just head lands and around drains etc.. Started to rain on the last 3 miles home. Did the little patch I'm going to plant 14" rows with the All-Crop drill with the 475. Looks like it should plant real nice. Then changed to the 490 and did a 14 acre field just to see how that will compare to the no-till ones. Conditions were near perfect when I started. Got about 1/4 done and it started spitting rain, kept going.By the time I finished it was getting a little slimy! Still dust coming up and worked good but don't think I could have run another 20 minutes. Trailer is a Kory 3000# gear with custom made hydraulic wagon hoist and 4x7 foot dump box. Will lift/dump 2000# to 50 deg with 800 psi hydraulic pressure. IHC_1470 Posted May 3 Share Posted May 3 Been working on the 3588 I picked up last summer. Been working on electrical issues. Think I have most of them sorted out, a little run time will tell the story on that. The digital tach has not worked correctly in the time that I have owned the tractor. I knew the connector on the RPM transducer was messed up, it had been converted to butt connectors and they were in poor shape. So replaced the transducer, about two feet of that harness as I found a broken wire higher up and put the correct connector on the new harness. Tach worked about 70 percent of the time but was still dropping out. Some more digging and I discovered that the fuse holder for the tach was not making a good connection all the time. While working on that I noticed that the cab relay was powering up and down. Tracked that down to a bad 80 amp fuse. Someone had gotten creative in the past. Seems like it would have been just as easy to have replace that fuse with the correct one. But no they adapted a fuse and the solder connection had failed. Repaired the harness under the cab floor several wires had missing insulation so spent some time repairing those issues and wrapping the wires with new tape. Think many of those issues were from the oil leaks that were soaking the harness. The steel tubes for the steering and brake supply are long since gone and have been replaced with poorly routed hoses. For now I repaired with more hose but in the future will replace with the correct lines. The other issue was very poor brakes. Figured that out last summer, just did not have the time to replace them. Poor might not be the best word to use, when I got into them they were really beyond poor. As you can see in one of the pictures one lined plated is stuck to a steel plate resulting in the splines disappearing. I can not pull the two plates apart either. Engine gauges left me wondering what they were really trying to say. For instance key on engine off and cold would give you a oil pressure reading of around 15 psi and water temp reading about middle of the cold band. Pull wire on oil sender and gauge would drop to zero so replaced the sender. Water ended up being both gauge and sender. Hopefully things will be a little more dependable now. I am sure there is still a bug or two that need squashed. Still planning on a LED upgrade for the light. At least I have them all working. Need a good bath so I can see if there are still leaks or if I have them stopped. And somewhere in all that I need to get auto steer installed to keep the help happy. Or are they more for the wildlife? Not a common crop in our part of the world any way you look at it. I managed to get my popcorn and watermelons planted yesterday. Used my little 340 utility and the Allis 1 row planter to put the popcorn in. It's a little slower, but I think it plants a little better than my IH 2 row. The watermelons I did with an old hand planter and a nail apron full of seeds. Sorta surprising how much ground you can cover in a short time that way. Also got the little bit of kitchen garden in for Mrs. Mac, or as she calls it her "salsa garden". All I've got left now is the cotton, a few pumpkins, and planting a few runner beans in amongst the field corn. I planted some rice on the 826 until I got soaking wet and quit. My wife sprayed burn down and premerge herbicides on the flowers. I don't reckon I'll ever get a cotton picker, but I did get 2 new pick sacks Sunday. Friend of mine bought them for me at a recent estate auction, $25 each and don't look like they've been used much if at all. I happily paid him for them, since I figured I'll never see another one in as good shape let alone two! Decided to put one up for safe keeping and keep one out to pick in this fall. Funnily enough I don't mind picking cotton, or corn for that matter. It's methodical and strangely calming. Same with hoeing; ain't much better than a sharp hoe, a chew of Beechnut, and a long shady row of corn or cotton late in the evening.
