greasetomyelbows
Drain **** in block failed. Could not be removed with wrench, so drilled out but that left some brass still stuck in hole. Considered using thread chaser, but it appears to be NPT. Question is, because of taper is there a risk of running the tap too deeply so a new drain **** of original size won't fit? What is best practice?
ksfarmdude
If your pretty much center on your first hole just keep going up sizes til you see block threads and use a pic the turn out the brass threads
Captian Kirk
An NPT tap or thread has a ¾" taper per foot. You should be able to bite on to the brass and feel when you hit steel.
Diesel Doctor
Yes, use a pipe tap as a chaser but only go as deep as you need to get a new plug screwed into the hole. If you leave a bit of brass, that will act as sealant since it is a soft metal. Like Captain Kirk says, these are tapered so you can go to deep and ruin the hole.
greasetomyelbows
We may have already ruined the hole in the process of drilling it. May have to go a size larger. What a pain. I'll find out next weekend.
midnightman
I’ve found that sometimes depending on how the new plug is threaded, some are actually left slightly larger diameter at the top and could possibly allow tapping slightly deeper if it will save you from having to go up a size. The last seized brass plug I took out for a customer was on his outdoor wood boiler. Thought I was beat with it, but didn’t have much to lose at the point I was at. Drilled a hole through it and then melted it out with my cutting torch. Quick cleanup with pipe tap. After screwing with it for an hour and a half, it only took me 15 minutes to actually get it done
12_Guy
Teflon tape. Lots of tape. I have twisted the tape lengthwise into a coarse string and then wrapped it into the thread. Follow through with a couple of flat wraps on top.
Farmall Doctor
Just run the pipe tap into it and put a new **** in. If the threads become too large, you could install a nipple and a cap. I had to do that on my W9. I have been finding that a lot of hardware store brass pipe threads are on the large size.
Farmall Doctor
W**, this forum… seriously! C-o-c-k gets censored out, but Nipple is ok?? It’s a friggin drain ****! It is listed in the parts book. On my steam engine I have two try cocks. My friend has some chickens… I could go on. Haha. Maybe Someone needs to put up a list of the forbidden words, and maybe alternatives. Better dust off the old thesaurus. I noticed that he-l l is banned too. I find that amusing considering there seems to be quite a few folks here that are into religions, and it’s their word. Rant over. edit… even abbreviations get banned now. What the??

You don’t have to go all the way to the next NPT size... you can drill and tap it straight thread and use a bolt and gasket.
hillman
What do you mean by ruined the hole. can you take a pic or describe what you have done? did you tap too far into the hole and the plug goes in too far now?

He said that there is still brass in it, so I wouldn't call that "ruined"
