Carco G4 for TD18-182

Recommended Posts

Hello, been a few years since ive been on the forums, not alot of familier names left here now, hoping someone on here can help me out. I recently picked up a Carco G4 that was mounted to a TD20-201 and I plan on putting it on my TD18-182, I was able to get PDF manuals through Carco, even the a copy of the original assembly report for my serial number.

When I looked in the manual the TD20 shows a different part number for the PTO than the TD18, now I know the TD20 does use a different transmission than the TD18, does anyone know how much difference there would be between the PTO shafts?

My next question would then be does anyone have a PTO shaft that was removed from a TD18 so that I can compare the spline and length to mine.

Thanks!

Stefan

Welcome back I have used your old TD14 pick of the most sunken buried machine that wasn't in a swamp brought back to life 😁

182 and 201 are going to be very similar machines the tranny differences might but just a reverser? I know different parts numbers but I would be tempted to try it and I know it's not a small piece of iron to wrestle around...I don't recall the 182 when did you get that and how have you been doing?

A suggestion from total ignorance

I've only seen 1 18-182 and I've never seen a winch on a dozer.

But a lighter weight "possumbility" - it looks like you might be able to take that shaft off the winch?  Then see how it fits in the dozer and if the dimensions coincide with where the shaft of the winch is going to be when installed?

Sorry I don't have any winch information to offer, but Your Hough loader in the winch picture looks great. Is that an HH? I have one myself and don't often see them. Do you still run the Hercules JXD engine? Steve

Haha the poor old 14 looked pretty sad in that hole. It got a facelift this summer when my radiator froze over last winter. Apparently radiators dont drain too well with 2 inches of crud in the bottom of them. Heres how its looking now.

The TD18 belonged to a friend of mine, Ive been trying to get it for close to 20 years and he finally offered it to me for $1000 back in 2020. It had seized up and hadnt ran in probably 20 years. He bought it from the original owner in the early 70s, used it for many years to build basements before he hauled it to his gravel pit to strip the ground. Eventually he stopped using it and thats where it stayed.

Heres a picture of it from around 2009, shortly after this photo was taken he drug it across the pit with his loader to the resting spot it in was in when I went to bring it home.

Heres where it sat when I got to it again, one steering clutch was stuck the other still worked, unfortunately it was seized on 4 of the 6 cylinders.

I brought it home and pulled it apart, I was able to save 2 of the cylinders, and I picked up a TD14-142 engine that donated its sleeves and pistons for the 18.

I got it all back together and working good, Havent tackled the steering clutch yet but hope to this summer.

I was able to put it to work this fall moving some fill, I have a  few videos of it working not sure how to add them here though.

Ive been doing well, work full time for a police department about an hour from home, the drive sucks but its nice to not see anyone I deal with on my days off. I have a 10 month old son and 2 step kids that keep me pretty busy now. Ive been collecting up what I can for old gear but getting harder with the cost of transportation. Hope all is well with you aswell!

I have the shaft off and inside the garage, I will probably try it when the weather improves, but the shaft sits a fair ways inside the transmission so I would have to make some sort of extension to hold the end to get it back out.

It is an HH, I have 2 of them. I picked this one up a few years ago because it was almost identical to the HH my father had and sold in 1991 when i was only 2. Unfortunately the JXD was pulled out and a QXLD and a torque converter from an HF were put in. It doesnt have quite the power the JXD would have but it works pretty good. My father had the JXD in his but they snapped the crank and swapped it with a 6 cylinder IH engine.

My other HH is the only my father had, I bought it back in 2021, unfortunaly most of the tin work was replaced, the engine and torque converter were swapped out for a 302 V8 and a 4 speed, which had seized up. I pulled them both inside our rink and rebuilt the better of the two over the summer of 2021 and now my dads machine is just a parts unit, but will never be scrapped as long as im alive anyways.

I forgot to mention the HH my father owned was purchased from the same friend that had my 18, he sold us the loader back in the late 60s, before he owned the 18, he also had an HO which sat in his yard for a long time, you can see a corner of it sticking out behind the dump trailer in this picture.

Stefan, Thanks for the pictures and story on the HH Hough. It is nice to know that you have been able to get one back in such good shape. If I ever get the time, I hope to fix my HH up too. I will use your photos as inspiration. Good luck with your winch. Steve
