Case ih 1200 planter questions.

Can you guys tell me about the 1200 vacuum planter. I've only ran Deere vacuum planters.

Looking at a 3 point 12 row stack fold.

With lift assist wheels.

Would a 2wd 5488 be able to pick it up without needing the wheels or are the lift assist wheels needed?

Also wondering how well the closing disc and the wide wheel works!

What monitor works the best for this planter because the one in looking at doesn't have one.

I would only be planting corn and soybeans with it.

12 row stack, HOLY HEAVY!!!! You'll for sure need the lift wheels. Our 5088 will lift an 8 row gull wing fold JD but you pretty much don't steer it....

The opening and closing system is far superior to the JD, make sure the press wheels are pretty tight to the opening disc. Make sure the opening disc's are within a half an inch from new. The closing disc's work good with 1 spiked wheel and 1 solid wheel on each row unit.

Can't help with the monitor, I run an ag leader Integra on my 900.

I used to have a 1230 stack fold, 12 row. We pulled it with a MX255, 20 front weights, duals on all 4 corners, and lift assist wheels on the planter. I wouldn’t want to try it with a 2wd 5488.

We bought a 12 row 40" 1200 and converted it to 11 row 20", which subtracted a fair amount of weight as it is all on the main frame amd we eliminated the wings, 2 gauge wheels, 2 transmissions and 2 large fold cylinders. Our 1586 will lift it, but you wouldn't go far. Our Puma 145 with FWA will handle it decently, but it is awfully light on the front. We do not have lift assist wheels which I think would make a big difference.  John Deere planters were somewhere around 2/3 the weight of CaseIH, but there is a big difference between them and we liked the CaseIH better.

We had a guy try to use a 1200 stacker 12R 30" planter with a 4850 John Deere MFD with a full rack of weights up front and NO lift assist wheels....wasn't very long before he got the lift assist wheels. On a 5488, you can T the lift assist wheels into the external 3pt. hitch cylinder so the hitch/lift assist wheels all work on one circuit.

As far as a monitor....those originally used either a Universal Display(small screen), or a Universal Display Plus(large screen). These were first generation touch screen displays that were black & white. Later on they were replaced by the Pro600 color display, which was replaced by the still used Pro700. I think you will find you need the display to fold/unfold the planter and operate the markers properly.

With the lift assist wheels and a full rack of weights you don't think a 2wd 5488 would handle it? No fertilizer or insecticide boxes.

A neighbor ran a jd 7100 stack fold 12 row 30" with a 2wd 4640. He ran a full set of weights.  It was a plate planter.

Another neighbor ran a 20ft 5400 3pt grain drill on a 1586. He ran a full set of  weights on the front plus on each side.

A 5488 will lift alot but I can't address the hydraulics.

12 row 40" stack fold 3pt is the norm on cotton farms in the Delta.

I hope this helps.

A guy I used to work with bought a 1200 12 row with no assist wheels, also had a 5488 2WD. With a full rack of weights and the planter empty he could lift the front end of the tractor off the ground with his hands,  He added lift assist wheels and still hated it. He said it's the tail wagging the dog. Used it one year and he bought a pull type 1200.

He still has it and would probably sell it cheap.

What is the gpm flow required for a 12 row?

What is the required vacuum pressure for corn and bean plates?

Hydraulic drive or ground drive? If its ground driven, the only constant hydraulic function will be the vacuum fan, which can use up to 13 GPM maximum. Most of the time with corn or soybeans it will take somewhere between 8 & 10GPM.

Vacuum will run anywhere from 18-22" in corn, 15-16" in soybeans.

Ground drive.

I think my 2wd 5488 would be a perfect tractor with 14.9x46 rears for this planter.

Better make them triples, won’t have much tire width.

I run a little different setup not too different.

I have a 5288 that I run on my 1200 12/23 pivot planter. It has the big PTO pump on it so I use 2 sets of remotes on the tractor, one to raise and lower and the other on constant flow for one of the vacuum fans. My overall opinion is that if I farmed all flat ground I'd run my 52 on this planter for a long time, but when I get in hills the coolant temp gauge climbs pretty fast and I know the trans oil has to be getting up there as well. But I do have liquid on the planter and have the engine turned up pretty good too so I'm sure that contributes to the high temps. I just have a bad feeling that if I run this setup for too long, I'd be rebuilding the transmission. So now I'm on the hunt for a good 9130 with a PTO to plant with.

As far as the 3pt planter, we had a new 1235 16 row 30 in here at my dealership and with it on a new 310 magnum it definitely knew it was back there weight wise, way more than I though it would. I would be wanting to hook that 54 to the one your looking at before you buy it if it doesn't have the lift assist wheels.

The one I'm looking at is 5 1/2 hour drive. It does have lift assist wheels.

I also farm some hills. I'm also surprised that a 5488 might not be big enough for this planter.

I'm starting to doubt this planter will work for me.

Other than the weight aspect of it, I wouldn't get too gun shy. I have run my setup for 2 years now and will probably have to get a 3rd year before I can afford to buy another tractor. If the planter you are looking at is a box fill and you only have to use 1 set of hyd outlets then it shouldn't be working the tractor too hard.

Yes individual row boxes no insecticide boxes.

13gpm is what it needs. Do the markers use a outlet too?

The dealer says the lift assist works with  the 3pt.

So I'm thinking one set of remotes for markers and one set for vacuum.

How does the lift assist work with the 3pt?

Do you plumb off of the external 3pt hydraulic cylinder?

You can add extra weight up front beyond what will fit on the std weight bracket. I've seen weight brackets that hold 20 weights. You can add liquid to the front tires and side weights too. I'm pretty sure the 5488 will lift the planter if you can keep the front wheels on the ground.

I don't know about the skinny tires though. They always ran 20.8x38.

When the 5x88 was still common in delta cotton country,  they normally ran 8 and 10 row wide 3 pt 800/900 plate planters with chemical boxes. I've seen 10 row wide planters on the bigger 86 series tractors. Nobody ran lift assist.

Of course the delta is flat.

Thx-Ace
