I think i have solved the diesel pickup issues

It’s not about getting them hot enough it’s about keeping the heat in the combustion chamber to more efficiently burn more of the fuel completely creating less soot and carbon. Soot and carbon is unburnt fuel.

I am forever hearing about about diesel pickup owners with very large repair bills, catastrophic failures at relatively low miles and lots of talk about bent push rods, stretched head bolts , blown turbos etc.

sitting at a light today I noticed there was a diesel beside me, another in the other direction at the same light, both of them had the same design, they seemed to only have idle and WOT, seems a strange way to design a truck. They had to hang back for traffic to clear then WOT until they ran out of road, and then had to go back to idle until the cars cleared out again, seemed to make navigating the city quite difficult, as i drove around i saw they were not alone in this, seems all of the diesel trucks i saw behaved this way.  The gas trucks in the same traffic and most of the cars seem to have been equipped similarly to my truck where the have an accelerator that allows a gradual increase and decrease of speed at much lower and more gradual engine speeds.
i sent a letter off to the big three explaining my findings, i will wait to hear back and report here. I think I may have helped solve many of the issues I hear about with these modern trucks.

if the big three get back to u on that maybe u could send a letter to harley davidson they seem to have the same problem. also harley must not put a idle circuit in there carbs. or computers. seems like riders have to keep twisting the throttle to keep them running at stop lights and signs

Babying them causes more problems than driving them hard. Unfortunately without a big heavy trailer you can't put enough load on them to get things hot enough so the emissions equipment doesn't get screwed up.

In school bus driver training, they teach you to mash the accelerator pedal to the floor on the diesel/automatic buses. Either your foot is on the floor or it is off the pedal. No in between.

that must be the same school that the brown delivery truck drivers go to

No that is because our “time management specialists” have their routes figured on how many seconds each delivery should take and make them answer when they run over schedule.

I out ran one of those trash can tipped, coal rollers Friday night, going through Pueblo Colorado. I know my dually runs decent but his just blew smoke. My wife wasn’t impressed.

Just goes to show you can make lots of power without all the smoke.

Our UPS guy is super nice send pretty laid back when you talk to him but he drives that truck like he stole it.

They run over my kid or my dog they will wish they were dealing with their time management specialist. I can promise that.

Cracks me up. I ride an ancient Norton Commando which, with stock pipes, is almost as loud as an HD with drags. At a light I pride myself on having the old Amal concentric carbs tuned well enough that it will sit and idle quietly without loading up. I don't know why HD riders insist on blipping the throttle, perhaps to be sure everyone notice them. Not a problem for me😁

That's it in a nutshell, its a DICK thing, my carb is tuned fine and my idle circuit is just fine also, the blipping and nhra red light starts are to prove "I'm a mannn, yes I ammm, and I'm tellin you sooo,

(Apologies to spencer davis.)

What year is your norton? What cc? Used to love them back in the 60s, them and royal enfield had their own look, very kul

I tend to speed on the highways a bit but overall drive fairly sensible with my truck.  I went the other way with add ons  too, dpf had been gutted before I got the truck but it had never been tuned so every time it went into a regen it would smoke black. Even siting idling you could  see black smoke coming out now just imagine it under a heavy load or fast acceleration lol. I got the truck tuned shortly after I got it. Guy asked me how much extra power I wanted. None I said just turn the egr and dpf off. Mileage picked up quite a bit just from the lack of regens so I was happy enough with that. Snowmobiles are another area where guys go crazy with add ons. Drove a friends sled like mine that had been tuned and clutched. Imagine he’s spent around 2-3,000$ on addons. His words when he drove mine was that’s what I’ve been chasing to get back to lol.  He’d had some clutch issues as well caused by some other problems but it kind of went downhill from there. I didnt notice a huge difference in power either.  200 hp is more then enough for me anyways lol.

I have one of the very last and arguably the best before they went under. It's a 1975 MK III, an 850. For the most part not a whole lot different from the first Commandos of the '60s but came with disc brakes front and rear. Calling them brakes is generous. I put a larger floating front disc with an AP racing caliper and sleeved the master cylinder from 5/8ths down to 13mm. It now actually stops. There are other refinements as well as electric start, well, as originally equipped more of an assist. It now has a modified Denso starter instead of the 2 pole Prestolite and starts like a modern bike. 3 phase alternator lets me keep the lights on too.

First bike was a BSA then rice rockets but I only kept the Norton - now about 40 years.

In a manner of speaking, yes. Is running a diesel pickup truck around empty practical? No. Is mashing the fast pedal fun? Maybe not for you, but to some people it is.

Isn't it wonderful that we all have choices, and we are all free to choose our own forms of fun? Too bad there isn't enough time in the day to sit around criticizing others for their choices, when it isn't harming us...

I don’t care how much they beat on their own vehicles, nor do i care what they do with them, however everyone on the road has the responsibility to act and drive in a responsible manner, regardless of if that is a soccer mom, a dork in a rice burner or somebody with a big diesel truck, they also have the responsibility to stay off their damn phones, while many shirk their responsibilities, it still irritates me when they do. Everyone here would be up in arms if some mother and her kid got run over and killed by a drunk driver, you mean to say it’s better when its some idiot trying to set the world land speed record between lights while taking selfies of himself blowing smoke?

Furthermore, when the entire line of traffic cant breathe and some old lady walking down the sidewalk with her shopping bag has to stop and have a coughing fit, because its so cool to roll coal, i feel that goes beyond personal choice to just plain being an inconsiderate asswipe. It also gives a bad name to the thousands of responsible grownups driving diesel pickups out of choice or necessity who don’t behave like that.
and no, i am not buying that they need to mat the snot out of it at every intersection, if they really needed the RPM they could pull it down a gear, its all about noise and smoke, and there is a time and a place.

Unlike some other makes the Norton following is huge so every part is available and not unreasonably priced. One could easily build a complete bike, albeit expensively, from new parts.

The apparent mission is to seek out the easily identified Tesla and roll coal on it making some sort of macho statement. Blasting a cloud of soot on pedestrians is simply unavoidable collateral damage, they shouldn't be walking.

If there was a little more thinking with the large head instead of the small one we might not be discussing electric trucks right now.

I think you will find that idiots driving that way has been around since the horse and buggy days. The five figure repair bills that don’t include a new engine have only started recently.

And when the horsepower is at MAX and they are rolling coal, then the tranny goes "BOOM"!

Another 5 figure bill.

Here's your sign?

I must be getting old?

Hardly. The Commando does pretty well keeping up with newer bikes, doesn't have the all-out heart stopping acceleration but is just wonderful on the back roads. 9N has no prayer of keeping up with anything😄
