Scary stuff when one goes. I had an after school job at a Firestone. 4 Deluxe Champions $100. Those bias ply tires wore out fast. Kids like me just did passenger tires while older full time guys did truck tires. They were all lock ring back then and they rarely used the cage but one day a guy apparently had a bad feeling about one and filled it in the cage. It let go and in that enclosed area the explosion was deafening. Cage contained it, ring came loose and rolled around but not with any velocity. It made a believer of me. Plenty of YouTube videos out there of security cameras catching explosions.

We had a kid at Ft Riley killed that way too. Truck driver, fix a flat in the shop area. Didn't use a cage. What he did was turn the ring down and he then sat on the tire to air it up. When it let go it threw him head first into the blade of a blade tank that was also in the maintenance bays.Β

Takom M60A1 w/ERA and Dozer Blade build - Armor/AFV ...

Saw a lot of bent cages in the army too.

I hate to speak ill of the dead, but he sat on it!!!!!Β  Β

If I have to air one up I take it out behind the barn with the air chuck clamped on and then go inside to turn the air on at the compressor!Β  I figure if it goes off I will be far enough away and protected by the barn.

I knew a guy that worked for local dealer that was really good with tires. They had something like 5-6 new running gears come in and he was mounting the tires, over 20 of them one after another. They were all 15” except one was 16”. Never noticed it, even seated the bead. Set it down turned to grab the next one and boom. Luckily it went straight up hit the ceiling and came down farther away from him than where it started. Only thing hurt was his pride for not noticing it and his nerves were a little rattled.Β
