ryangpayne
The winter project I’ve been working on is building a gooseneck dump trailer. I’m combining a galion 11’ dump bed I bought and a truck frame I got off auction time from I believe a CF500 ford cab over truck. I got the bed mounted, now I’m about ready to cut the front of the frame off and put a gooseneck hitch on it. Looking for suggestions on that part. I bought a piece of 12” 19 lb I beam to use. Would you guys mount the uprights for the gooseneck straight to the truck frame rails including gussets front and back? Or would you cap the frame rails with a piece of I beam that sticks out about a foot on each side and mount the uprights off that so that you could get them wider apart? Or maybe something completely different? I’m open to any suggestions and plan to gusset and brace everything up. I’m hoping to haul about 5 yards of dirt in it pulled by a f450 ford. Wanted a dump trailer but couldn’t pay $12k for one
jimw
Nice project. I think I would cap them with a piece between and build off that.
AKwelder
Not knowing exactly what the frame is made of I would plate the last few feet of frame rail (have a plate bent to be a channel that the truck frame fit around) and bolt the truck frame to this, then weld your uprights and assembly to these plates. There is a huge amount of flex and stress at the intersection between the frame and upright. The plating would spread this out. And truck frame rails can be different to weld up. Looks like a fun project.
ryangpayne
That is a great idea. I will get my local machine shop to bend me up a couple sleeves to bolt to the frame and weld my hitch too. I hadn’t thought of that but that was the kind of advice I was needing. I was a little iffy on welding the uprights straight to the frame. It looks like I can run those sleeves back under the the bed a bit and catch some bolts that go through a cross member and some more holes out front further. I’ll post more pics when I get some more done. Thanks!
ryangpayne
Thought I’d post a few pics of my progress so far. It’s far from professional but I think it will work for what I want to do. It’s been a lot of work so far. Still have a little way to go yet. Please excuse all my junk
Red River North
Looks good! Do you have a plan for brakes?
lotsaIHCs
Is that a 102 or a 122 in the background? The trailer looks like it'll be a real handy unit!
ryangpayne
Thanks! I don’t have a plan for brakes yet. I think just using it on the ranch here I could get by without them. I considered looking into an electric over hydraulic unit for if I wanted to use it on the highway but I need to research that more. It has hydraulic disk brakes on it and I have left all that and capped the lines just in case. That is a 102 cub cadet to the side, and a parts machine I bought mostly for the steering gear box. I picked up a little IH rear blade/rake I need to get mounted on it.
lotsaIHCs
The other cub cadet must be a 126-129 or a 149? Just by looking at the rear fenders anyway.

I have a 129 and my brother has a 149 and both have the wider rear wheels and tires. According to my owner's manual the 10.5 rear tires and wider wheels were optional for the standard 8.5. But the ones on that tractor look a lot taller than the ones on mine.

It has notched frame for 14 horse. Improvised lift lever in place of failed electric. Guessing rear wheels are 14 inch. Curious if they found wheels to fit or are they re-engineered. ryangpayne
That parts tractor is a 147. The tires on it are 27-8.50x15. I’m not sure what the rims came off of. The centers are just flat plate. The previous owner made a lot of modifications to it lol. I assume he wanted the PTO clutch off the front so he torched the end of the crankshaft off.

Bet you never thought you'd get this much interest in a couple of CCs in the background of your project! I notice these things because I have 8 of them in my barn. I'm missing 3 of the 120 series. Always keeping my eye out for the ones I'm missing!
ryangpayne
Finished up the trailer a couple weeks ago! Tried it out hauling a few loads of brush but haven’t got to try it out with a load of dirt yet. I think it’s going to be pretty handy.
