Journal Entry by Emily Leinenbach  1 hour ago

I wish this post was a lot different.

We hit a road block today. About 2 hours into the trial Zach’s blood pressure dropped very low and after getting that stabilized they decided to stop trial for the day.

He was pretty adamant he wanted to start back and although his motivation to restart it impressed the staff, they wouldn’t budge.

So- tomorrow is another day.
Zach continues to feel like he is getting more localization of sensation and I remain so hopeful that is a sign of things to come.

I have a devotional/journal given to me early in our process and today’s was about unexpected change. To paraphrase ‘change often tests our faith because our current provision doesn’t yet match our set of upcoming needs’.  Having faith is easier on days when things are following course. But faith is necessary on the hard days. Faith is what allows us to let go of the course we think we should be on and surrender to whatever is happening, acknowledging our vulnerability and seeking signs of provision for the new path.

We have certainly been reminded that no matter how well we plan and prepare our life, nothing is guaranteed to us. Even the most simple things are things to be grateful for.

And- we are grateful for the hope in tomorrow, for the progress we have seen so far, for the support we have, and for safe travel.

We pray for healing. We pray for independent breathing. For shoulder movement to strengthen, for facial nerve regeneration/movement. We pray for healing of all nerves and return of functional movement. We pray for expedited healing and ability to get the physical therapy and work. We pray for return to home.

Thank you.

Journal Entry by Emily Leinenbach  8 minutes ago

Today was still a little rocky.

Yesterday’s chest x-ray showed fluid that will need to be drained from lung. That is now tentatively scheduled for tomorrow. we are hoping that this helps get us back on track with breathing trial.

Many have asked me about what the breathing trial is.
Essential it is a set of goals/steps to meet to get off the mechanical support of breathing.
the first “check off” is to go 12 hours of using cpap therapy through vent (this is like what people use who have sleep apnea- it gives a little extra pressure behind the breaths taken spontaneously). So we are in the phase of building up to that 12 hour mark. When he hits that - as long as blood gasses look good - the next “check off” is 24 hours of cpap.

Then they will convert to a device that just provides oxygen, no pressure and will get to 12 hours of that.
then 24.

Then that device only for 3 days. And if all looks good at that 3 day mark- the vent leaves the room.

At this point we know Zach doesn’t have all the muscle movement back that supports breathing- it’s not just your lungs and diaphragm but also muscles through back, shoulders, and chest wall that help us move air, cough, etc.

So at this point we are just trying to work out and build stamina in the ones that are “back on” as we wait for the others to join the party so to speak.

So we pray.
We pray in thanks for the support of family, friends; For the promise and support found in our faith; and for the improvements we have seen so far.

We pray and ask that Zach does well with procedure tomorrow and it is the answer we are looking for in helping to move progress forward for independent breathing.
We pray for the return of muscle and reflexes needed for independent breathing and normal communication.
We pray for full body healing and functional muscle movement.
We pray for quick recovery from here and getting to rehab and then to home.

thank you.

They did take Zach down today but didn’t see the fluid via ultrasound they thought was there on the chest X-ray. So they did not do the procedure.
There are a couple options they may try but this all happened late enough in the day there was no other progress after that.

We will wait to see what tomorrow brings.

We are thankful for healthcare we have available, for friends and family supporting up, and for the progress and healing we have seen so far.

We continue to pray for complete healing, independent breathing (and to regain movement/reflexes to support), and normal communication. We pray for full body nerve regeneration and return of functional movement.
We pray for answers regarding the abnormality on chest x-ray and relief of that issue. We pray to avoid any secondary issues such as infection. We pray for physical and mental strength and we pray to move quickly toward a return to home.

Thank you.

Zach delivered a pretty great birthday gift today-

12 hours in breathing trial completed today!!
Also a little more shoulder movement today and saw some movement in upper legs although very, very slight.

We are so grateful for today’s progress.
We continue to be so grateful and humbled by the support around us.

We pray for complete healing. We pray for independent breathing, strengthening of shoulder/accessory muscle strength, facial nerve regeneration, and continued building of leg movements we saw today.
we pray for full body nerve regeneration and healing. We pray for more functional movement. We pray for physical and mental strength.

Thank you.

The RT today said she expected today to be a rest day but would let Zach do trial again “as tolerated” just to get a little work out in and then flip back to rest settings.
He went just over 10 hours which was more than originally expected.

Of course we wish the 12 would go to 24c then off. But Zach won’t be able to independently breathe until more accessory muscles to breathing/coughing and reflexes wake up. So these trials are helping to strengthen the muscles we have and hopefully trigger more to wake up/respond.

The thought is that if he has endurance with the muscles he has working now this should make our ultimate step/wean go smoother when everything else fires back up.

He will have bedside procedure tomorrow to clear some “junk” out of his lungs which Sh sound help too.

The leg movement still seems to be there although just so slight. I have to really watch to see it- but I am optimistic to see the start knowing it will build from here.

We are thankful for so many things- the progress especially, our faith to lean into, the support of family and friends and the depth of knowledge/skill sets we are blessed to be surrounded with that can step in for us. We have some pretty gifted/talented/driven friends and family.

We continue to pray for complete healing. We pray for independent breathing and recovery of all functions and muscle strength/use to support it. We pray for total body nerve regeneration  and functional muscle movements.
We pray to expedite this healing so we can hear his voice and see his smile again. We pray that God times this waking up so that when he is ready to get fully off vent and move to intense rehab we have muscles moving and we can optimize that time. We pray that God defies the odds of timing and rate of recovery for Zach.
We pray for safe travel and we pray for physical and mental strength for Zach and our kids.

Thank you.

Zach worked in breathing trial today until the bronch procedure but then had to stop after.

Overall- the procedure went well and he said he felt better afterward.

He was able to move upper legs a little again today. Still very very slight and not something he can do over and over- seems like after a few times there has to be a break between in order to do again.

We are very thankful for this progress. We are grateful for each step that brings us closer to recovered. We are grateful for our family and friends, community, and co-workers.

We continue to pray for complete healing. We pray for strengthening, building and bringing back of muscles and reflexes that support independent breathing. We pray for complete weaning from breathing support, return of normal communication, and facial nerve (all cranial nerves) regeneration.
We pray for total body nerve regeneration and return of functional movement. We pray for continued gains in leg movement and strength and also pray for continued new areas of awakening.
We pray for physical and mental strength. We pray for safe travel. And we pray that everyone helping us, praying for us, pulling for us knows how meaningful and appreciated it is.

Thank you.

Praying for Zach and Emily and family. This really makes me think about how hopeless no Faith to lean on would be. Thankful Emily and Zach are strong in their Faith

Today was 2 of 3 in this IVIG series.

Did about 8 hours of work in the breathing trial before having to stop due to some vitals changes.

Shoulder motion is a little more noticeable today. Not noticing as much in upper legs but some twitches in feet today.

We continue to pray hard that there is lots going on out of our visibility.

We are thankful for the progress we have seen up to this point. We are thankful to our friends and family. We are grateful for faith and hope.

We pray for complete healing.

We pray for recovery of facial nerve, supportive functions, independent breathing, healing from pneumonia.

We pray for functional movements in arms and legs that will allow us to optimize facility available rehab and strengthening.

We pray for continued assurances and strength- physical and mental, safe travel, and for our kids.

Thank you.

Today was a good day-

Started off with some new side to side movement through back and into hips- as with all steps this is starting fairly faint but definitely noticeable. Still have very very slight movements in both feet.

Breathing trial- worked just under 11 hours today.

Finished IVIG course. We also started a new therapy for his lungs to help “break up” what’s there with the pneumonia. It is a vest device that provides percussion and vibration. This is more aggressive than what we have had before and feel blessed the pulmonologist team advocated on our behalf to have it brought to the facility for use. We are hoping it helps not only break things up but stimulate too.

We are grateful for all the prayers and support. We are grateful for family and friends.

We continue to pray for complete healing. We pray for continued strengthening of muscles and reflexes needed to support independent breathing. We pray for that independence and return of normal communication.
We pray for return of function movement in every area and for continued strengthening in the areas we have started to see changes.

We pray for physical and mental strength.

thank you.
