Bad day for the 2588

Headed toward the last field of the year with one of our two 2588’s today when the spring on the tensioner broke sending the belts off the hydraulics. Instantly no steering, brakes or hydro function . My brother was driving the machine and was along for the ride. It was right after a turn and the wheels wouldn’t straighten up and the combine ran up a bank and flipped back on the road. This was a 1500 hour really good machine before this happened. He is in the hospital waiting surgery. The impact broke off the head of his femur and did a lot of damage to his hip . Combine will doubt will be totaled .

I hope your brother makes a complete recovery!

Machinery is replaceable, just not always much fun doing that unscheduled; people, not so replaceable.

My single biggest fear of operating machinery (at road speeds anyway) is losing steering control.

I think the combine will clean up all right. I’ve always worried myself about things like this happening. Seems like the breaks never work in 14 and 16 series. Probably wouldn’t Of helped in this case. . Most important is your brother will be okay . Sucks what he’s going through but could of been much worse.

Hopefully your brother will get a full recovery and have the least lasting issues from this.

Prayers for your brother.  A day nobody wants to see anyone else go through.  Most combines have a poor brake system.  I once had a combine jump out of gear at the top of a hill and basically ran away.  A check your underwear event but I kept my nerve and steered it to the bottom until she came to a stop.  Combines should have an emergency type brake system.

That's a shame. Hopefully your brother will heal up good and not have any pain in certain areas of his body from the accident for the rest of his life. 2588s good machine, have one myself, but like you say that one is done for. Their not like tractors that roll over and you can set them up and go again. That's got to be sprung. Either from laying itself over or when the wrecker set it back up.

That is terrible. I have started wearing the seatbelt in the combine and the sprayer because of stories like this, which is something I never thought I would do. I don’t know much about red combines, but our Deere machines have excellent brakes as well as cable controlled emergency brakes that work very good. Prayers for a speedy recovery.
