Snow in New York

Very narrow lake effect band. I’m about 59minutes south of buffalo. I got 6” Wednesday night. Was supposed to get 5-8 last night and over foot today. Ha! I haven’t even plowed my driveway, even the first 6”. It’s a typical lake effect storm that is hard to predict. A slight shift in the wind will move it 10-15 miles. Or in this case no shift in the wind just keeps dumping in one spot.
From what I have heard south half of buffalo got hit north half didn’t. Maybe a 15-20 mile wide stretch, including the football stadium, got 3-4 feet. I think it’s supposed to drift south tonight then break up and reform later this weekend.
It’s actually a somewhat a norm around here but politicians and the media blow it way up. They closed I90 earlier today when it did get bad. Worst thing was our governor declared state of emergency over our whole county which forced every school to close when about half of the districts didn’t even get half an inch.

Bulk is just to my north about 8 miles most of the day, little over 3’. Pounding pretty good right here at the moment but we only have about 6” so far. Band is supposed to shift back north tonight and leave 2-3’ more.

Most of my news comes out of buffalo. They are so hyped up on themselves not even a mention of that band off Lake Ontario hitting you guys.

I like seeing the big ones hit buffalo once every five years. We usually get 4-5 of those storms a year. The wind don’t blow it into the city very often. But Lake Erie usually freezes over at some point, I have heard you guys get more than us with Ontario staying open.

A dusting at my outpost in the Finger Lakes region.  My mother's uncle used to live in the Hamburg area which is getting hit very hard.  Like pickett said it can vary incredibly over 10 miles one way or the other.  Surprised that Dunkirk only has 10-12 inches as last reported.

Dunkirk only had 6-8 when I left work at 4 but it’s was hitting hard at that time. Pretty greasy ride home even following a salt shaker.

Oh yes, Ontario stays open and where we are we get the full fetch of it.

My part of Oswego county (SW corner of Lake Ontario) I got about 16" on Thursday. Nothing crazy. A few more inches today. Worst part of it wasn't the quantity, it was that it is warm. Lake effect in 30-35 degrees turns into grease on the roads and lead weight on the trees.

I have a huge white pine in my yard and I lost massive chunks of it.

It may or may not. Depends what weather does. My guess is the majority melts in 8-10 days but it could be here until May. 10 years ago I would have said it would stay but with warmer winters of late it is a tossup.
Lake effect snow is a different snow than a lot of you are used to, especially this time of year, it has a high moisture content so has a lot of shrink. In turn it is heavy and wet which makes it harder to move and slippery.

sell it to California to water their crops

New York was extremely dry during the past growing season and the telltale signs were there in the well that the water level was down.  Keep the water here.  Depending on the next few weeks a lot of it will soak in.

the Great Lakes drive our weather systems on both sides of Erie ,  when we get an east wind it means some kind of crap weather in the winter- usually wet snow or freezing rain but never the amount our US friends in Buffalo get. most of our weather comes from the west

1 -1 1/2 hours north west of here they get ALOT of snow off Lake Huron with the prevailing winds from the west

I heard this song years ago and loved it. Video is a little disappointing with no snow in the background and obviously not wny terrain. Canadian singer and if I remember right co-written by a guy couple towns away from me. You can tell whoever wrote it has driven 90 along Lake Erie in the winter.

I met an older gentleman years ago that was the last employee of our county to drive a V plow without wings. He said they all hated them. If you get in too deep the snow would back fill around you. They tried adding wings but the trucks they had at that time didn’t have enough power to move that much snow, so they got rid of them. Just about every highway dept around here has one sitting in front of their shop for decoration they never get used.

This truck has double 14’ wings.

Lyrics are cool. But you're right. That video is a letdown.
