Dually started growling and the conciseness is its going to take a rearend. Only about $6500! Need something to haul some critters to the packing plant in the meantime, so a 2009 Chebby 3/4 ton is showing up under the Christmas tree instead. 1/2ton Ford is leaving. 6500!!!??? Does yours have that special gold carrier?

The one on my 06 spun the races that hold the ring gear and spider gears. I hope this one didn’t, but am prepared for that. The 06 did it at the same mileage. People act like differential work is witchcraft, good dial indicator, sometimes a spreader a good set of torque wrenches and patience. I have done enough differential work, and never used a dial indicator, just white grease to set the gear lash. Last one spun the bearings and ruined the rearend housing. We tried pinging the housing but it failed and cost me a fortune when I didn’t have a penny. Cost nearly $4000, 10 years ago.
5088
Ouch I've seen carrier bearings spin on the carrier, or in the housing as you say, on a few different Jeeps over the years. They were all fatal injuries.
oleman
My BIL has a 93 GC jeep since new that he has now passed to another family member, I drove it around for a month and around 800 miles on it in 20010, it had 285,000 miles on it then, I used it because I was in South Carolina and AC still worked, just normal maintenance. I6 and automatic. It wondered at 70 MP on the freeway but no serious issues. It is still in use and in the family. Rambler/American Motors had a well deserved reputation for good running gear! I’ve got the same 93 xj Cherokee for farm use. Floorboards have rust, some holes, none (yet) up in the body or in the thicker unibody frame. Bought mine about 4yrs ago with dents for $3500, beat one bender back in semi original shape with a rubber hammer, bought $160 in the cheapest buggy wheels, and $500 in the cheapest mud tires. I keep the fencing tools in it and the chain saw during storms. Sometimes a pickup would be handier, but this stays packed and covered in poo and mud, and that’s easier on the trucks. Really wish I’d bought a low mile on of these for the road use before every one of them ramped in price.
oleman
BIL has a 2016, new in 2016, that he replaced the 93 with, he is retired but still works in a supervisory position in the County as a building inspector, basically fire inspections on commercial stuff, (only guy I know that knows fire extinguisher and suppression systems) and has always used his personal jeeps on the job. I assume he gets a mileage allowance for work related use. Don't believe the 2016 is an I6 but the replacement V6 he is not a truck guy so I never discuss his job. Makes a great BIL Sis says it has been a no issue vehicle for him at about 15,000 miles per year in mixed use.
Lazy WP
Well the rearend in the dually ended up costing $2700. In the meantime we thought we needed to haul a critter to the locker, so we ended up with a 09 Chevy 2500, 4x4, extended cab short box. Rides nice, fuel economy SUCKS! no money for toys

Dumb thing would pull nearly as good as the Cummins, but if it ever came apart during that pull it would have been ugly. Got nearly as good of mileage, but since we did the emissions thing on the Dodge, it will get better than 20 mpg empty and about 13 with a trailer.
DavCut
Picked this 2000 Cherokee up at the end of the year. 154 K. Very clean with just a touch of rust. Should make a good night and weekend rig for a while…
