I wonder if that is something special, pine knots and spruce/hemlock are particularly hard on tools. I wonder if that is some kind of hardened deal? Is it broken off or by design?
same sort of idea as a Nail Eater auger?

By design had a short striking area but has been used. It’s not sharp at all strangely. I may use it to make something else potentially.

You need a wall of wonder, hang that thing on it.

I’m good without that. Wall space is premium real estate in my shop. 😊

Ok i cant stay quite any longer.

I have a friend who’s hobby is blacksmithing. He makes all kinds of weird stuff that really doesn’t have any  real specific purpose.  That could just simply be a plant hanger.
His wife has had him make all sorts of stuff like that .

looks neat, i like it.

No need to stay quiet. Your guess is just as “right” as anyone else’s as far as I know. I make things also and have made simple things for a specific purpose in the past. This has had time spent on it forge welding so it had a purpose way back when but I doubt anyone will ever know what exactly that is.

maybe you could use one to hold your accoutrement bag for your black powder log splitter 😊

Guessing ..could be for separating die shoes to clear a jam.

Went to the estate auction for one of my dad’s cousins and one of these was on the hayrack with a tag that said “what is this.”  I had to buy it.
The company had a website that said little more than that they were in the tool and die tooling business.  Sounds like a good guess.  Brian.

WTH is this?IMG_20221210_115836776.thumb.jpg.1481f3a9126f154fe721dc34a3d2d7ed.jpg

The opening is adjustable and locks down with the wing bolt. Has a Buck Brothers chisel in it but shows no other markings or wear.

Saw it on the wall in a shop up in Door County. Just so happened another fella shopping there owns a tool museum. He had no idea what it is for either.
