Aftermarket kits for a 986….the good, the bad

MNH

Recommended Posts

I’ve got a 986 that needs a front axle overhaul and a freshen up of the engine bottom end (main and rod bearings etc.) Any recommendations on aftermarket kits for either of these projects? Or more importantly which ones to stay away from? Thanks!

I'd call Jessie at Restoration tractor sales in Lancaster pa for engine kits or parts, possibly axle parts also

There isn't much choice anymore in engine kits. It's Reliance, or an NOS kit of another brand that's been sitting on a shelf somewhere.

The main issue with Reliance as I understand it is the occasional out-of-spec part that slips past, ends up in the engine, and causes problems. MEASURE EVERYTHING is the solution to that problem.

Reliance is close to the only choice but not the only one.... Federal Mogul I think... dunno why I don't ever remember..... @Super A_sepa

Parts are still available from Mahle (clevite) and FP Diesel (Federal Mogul) for the Dt466 and some others.

I wonder what you get if you order a kit from CNH or Navistar?

Thx-Ace

CNH sells you a rebadged  (junk) reliance kit ....

You're correct, FP/Federal Mogul.  I think Jesse still has some of those kits in stock. I'd give him a call.
