Is it me, or are John LeCarre's books extremely difficult to suss out (understand)?

...for example..  "The Constant Gardener  '' is a very complex and sad story.....a novel ,based on his observations  of life in the African   Continent...but it is also an enthralling story...and a very good film...but Art...that is just my opinion   !!!...like music   ...different strokes etc

If I don't get burnt out on his novels, (BBC adaptations), I will try to give it a go.  Is it as deep as "Heart of Darkness"?

What I have noticed in the BBC series, it that perhaps Miss Moneypenney is as clued in on the inner workings as is Connie.
