Updated 1:00 PM Friday: The man killed in the Thursday night crash and fire at the Holiday gas station in L’Anse has been identified as 43-year-old Allan Dantes, Jr.

The announcement was made Friday morning by the American Rally Association. Dantes was a rally competitor, and was scheduled to take part in the Lake Superior Performance Rally this weekend.

He was also a member of the L’Anse Area Schools Board of Education, and was running for Baraga County Commission in District Five.

Updated 10:30 AM Friday: One person was killed, and one other hospitalized as a semi truck crashed into the Holiday Gas Station in L’Anse late Thursday night.

State police officials say the truck veered into the pumps around 11:00. A 43-year-old Baraga man, who was pumping gas at the time, was taken to Baraga County Memorial Hospital, where he died. A station employee was taken to BCMH for treatment of injuries. Their condition is not known. A customer in the store and a trainee riding as a passenger in the truck were not hurt.

The resulting fire heavily damaged the facility and a number of surrounding vehicles.

The semi driver, a 22-year-old man from Illinois, is being held at the Baraga County jail on a charge of Operating While Intoxicated Causing Death. The investigation continues, with assistance from MSP Accident Investigators and the MSP Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement Division.

US-41 was closed while firefighters battled the blaze.

The Baraga County Sheriff’s Department, the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Tribal Police, the Baraga Village Police Department and the L’Anse Police Department assisted at the scene. Firefighters from L’Anse, Baraga, Houghton, Arvon Township, Aura and Pelkie fought the fire, and Bay Ambulance provided EMS services.

It was the second serious fire in Baraga County in a little over a week. Carla’s Restaurant north of the village of Baraga was destroyed early last Friday morning.

I heard about that yesterday, bad deal.

On a side note, you are one of a handful of people that can say L'Anse is a little bit "south".

Are you getting snow up there?

The last few weeks and year it has been crazy here in North Dakota. A local teenage boy was crossing  4 lane hwy 2 and ran into a eastbound vehicle causing it to barrel roll and eject the two people killing the driver. Seriously injuring other occupant. Last Tuesday a semi truck was pulling thru a CP rail crossing after failing to yield and was seriously hurt after train hit semi. That night a local mans Dad pulled out across a hiway hitting a car killing the driver and injured the other two people and himself. It started early this year when an unlicensed tow truck operator left his stalled truck on I 94 by Fargo at dark with no lights. A family was killed when it rear ended the flatbed truck. The driver was gone he flagged down another person and just abandoned truck. They are looking for that guy as he fled the state after accident and was recently charged. This spring a Native American in Bismarck who had a miles Long rap sheet was high on drugs. Stole a pickup and ran over a elderly man picking up his grandson from high school. Backed up and ran over him a few times in front of students. He then stole a 80s blazer he chained behind stolen pickup until police chase he rolled entire train of vehicles down a overpass embankment I think a ups truck hit him at intersection. Then there is the case of the 40 year old guy that ran down a teenager a few weeks ago. There was a street dance in the small town that night and guy just ran teenager over in an alley because of wild altercation that night. It has just been a crazy year for deaths here in North Dakota. Then the farmer and his help that were shot a few weeks ago by their coworker it has just been crazy.

Dale, I don't know what duck is going on but its everywhere, we have this blind siding attacks on people just walking, knife attacks out of the blue, revolving door justice doesn't slow it down, you just have to keep your whereabouts on constant alert, and triple that whenever driving, the one thing my old man taught me at 16 when starting out driving is not driving while watching the happenings just in front of you but always watch that and into the next block and sideways, its worked pretty good especially on bikes, you stay safe my friend.
