Dave Downs
This new to me - a woodpecker putting holes in my house!!!! Any suggestions as to how to get rid of it?
KWRB
I've been dealing with it for a few years now. The advice I got, that I tend to agree with, is that the woodpecker is not the problem. The woodpecker's food is. Time to replace. No food, no holes.
snoshoe
I hate it but steel siding.
New Englander
Any time now that I replace any trim boards on the old house I've been using plastic - Azek or generic. Yeah, there are insects in there the bird is after.
12_Guy
They seem to love the wood boring, “carpenter” bee larvae. What I can’t figure out is how do they know where the larvae are in the board??
hagan
sonlived in low mountains in Colorado and the woodpeckers were pecking the knots out of the logs. A pellet gun helps
Dave Downs
I don’t see any evidence of bugs in the wood…but I'm not a woodpecker…… Was really surprised by the size of the hole!

I can't say for sure. The hole is not typical of the damage from going after the bee larvae. Around the corner from the hole appears to be a "run" vertically. That is what it looks like when they are getting larvae. I can't say from the picture but the hole the bee makes is usually clearly evident. augercreek
Outside of killing the bird I think replacing the corner boards with the composite lumber is the best choice.
td9inidaho
I had one that was an over achiever , it keeps it up and the tree will fall down
New Englander
I believe they hear the larvae. Any unpainted pine board on my barn has carpenter bee larvae and the woodpeckers drill them out. As I rebuild everything gets painted on both sides before going up. Dave's bird must be hearing something.

We had trouble with them when we lived in a pine log cabin. I only found one thing that worked, and I can't post about that here.
