Wow! That's quite the undertaking and I wish you the best of luck. I can imagine the mixed emotions before signing.

It’s not so bad, the same bank allows me to call the house I live in “mine”, so long as those checks clear!

Making a pad for generator, 277/480 transformer, diesel tank, and propane tank to sit on. Should limit any and all foreign traffic to one road, which will be monitored.

Not only that but keeps traffic around barns to a minimum, should limit possible disease movement.

remember the whole “6 feet and keep it neat” policy a few years back? 🤦‍♂️😁

Back in the 70' and early 80's we had friends near us who ran a duck farm for the white Peking ducks.  It was quiet an operation, from egg to packaged product onsite.  They even ground and formulated their own feed onsite.  All the byproducts got sold: feathers, feet, guts, you name it.  Avian flu took them down hard.  It was very sad to see!  Sad to see such a big second generation business taken down like that!  I remember that our family would go have dinner over there and after dinner the kids would pile into trailers pulled by minibikes with home made hitches to go out to shoot rats with 22's.  Lots of rats and lots of fun for kids!  I don't guess that would be politically correct now, but no one got hurt.  It was only rat shot and we were country kids.  I remember my parents going to the duck conventions with them down in New Orleans with them.

Whats all the control equipment, I understand you have fans, lights and probably adjustable ventilation, that looks like a lot of wires for turkeys.

The old ones were for stir fans and exhaust fans, if I counted right is was 20 fans total. Then all the temp sensors and pressure switch and vent doors

Re-using any of the plumbing? Or is it all toast? Your going to 3ph 480 so obviously your running new wires to everything. I believe you mentioned some corrosion issues? Going plastic this time?

Grey gold. Previous install was EMT and set screw connectors. Less than water tight for sure.

plumbing is going to be redone but isn’t that crazy to do.
I am  beyond ocd on the water line stuff, and it’s triggered looking at what they did lol

@zleinenbach reading @Rawleigh99’s post (and knowing nothing about the industry) is “flock” insurance available to protect you from avian flu outbreaks and the like?

Looks as if you are going to have quite the operation when you are done with your renovations.

I would think so.
I asked when the “haggling” was going on, and they said in a nutshell it’s next to impossible to get loss of income insurance on birds that aren’t yours technically.

I do know some other growers who purchase the birds can, and do, do that.

I think it’s about like anything with money involved, if they can pin it on you, you ain’t getting the money lol

Here’s some more.

got antennas for security cameras mounted, nothing crazy just some stainless clamps,

they will shoot to my house and we can monitor traffic (feed, gas, fuel, nosey neighbors lol) from home or phone. Again, just to keep abreast of what’s going on, not to hawk it.

got outdoor panel, disconnect, and transfer switch mounted, and all conduits measured to get wire for them.

drove ground rod in with my post driver.
It’s a 3” sch40 black pipe with a chunk of round stock welded in the end. Just the weight alone will push it in dang near. As dry as it is I was happy with the 3 minute install on a 10’ rod.

got one building of waterers and water line out, ran outta trailer so will need to wait for next one.

if homo depot had paint the tanks woulda gotten a makeover but that must be on a ship right now because there wasn’t a gallon of anything besides safety pink on the shelf.

I coulda used that but people already are saying I’m nuts lol

Looks like a heck of a project to get going.  Avian flu hit several farms around here.  Some believe the wild birds spread it.  Scary times but Usda took pretty good care of them.  Income loss was very minimal.

That’s what I was told too. The only thing is you have to keep up on bio security (rodent traps, disinfect everything, no sharing equipment between farms, etc)

but I believe most if not all guys do that anyways

Where’d you get 10’ ground rods?

pops had one one day, beat away on it till he was pooped but it kept going ever so slowly kept coming back throughout the day, pounding some more , eventually after he got down within a foot of the ground it started to come back out behind him. No surprise I guess, the mountain is solid marble.

They know you’d probably get tired after 8 and cut 2’ off 😁😁😁

you would hit rock by 8’ surely?

Depends on where you are at, i got a driver for our big rotary hammer, i cant say i was wowed, i have a post driver like you describe but it could use more weight, long thought of welding a chunk of solid steel to the top of it. As you know the biggest issue with driving a ground rod is trying to catch it.

Looks good Z!

Have you guy ever tried to install a ground rod using water?  I’ve heard of it, but haven’t tried it myself.  Probably doesn’t help a lick in rocks.

I would like to know more

Just a 12 ounce bottle of water and you can work the rod in without a hammer. Working it up and down, add a little water, and it goes down. I didn’t believe it until I tried it. You will have to use a hammer for the last few inches. As long as you don’t hit any rocks
