786 engine

Yesterday while trucking gravel, I saw a very nice 786 cutting a hay field along the highway. It looked to be in very good condition. I was curious as to what engine it would have. A lot of dairy farms have went out of the dairy business however there are quite a few left in this area, NW Wisconsin. A lot of 66 and 86 series tractors still in use. This was one of  the better examples I've seen.

Did some also have the 360 or was that only  some 886?

886 could have either, older ones had 360. 786 just 358

The 358 is a real smooth runner. My pump started leaking and when I picked it up from the diesel shop the guy said he didn't know if it was from an 886 or 786, so he set it for 886, a few more HP. I don't need it as it just mows so I really never noticed any difference.

886 was split production with early models having the 360 and later ones having the 358. I think both were well thought of.

886 had 2 different hp levels also with the 358. It was bumped from 85 to 90 pto hp when the 786 was released at 80 pto hp. This re-alignment happened when they dropped the 686.
