The Start of C 220 221 222 Corn Planter Farmall C project

That's a remnant patent decal. Whether it would have had a single number or have been more comprehensive, I'm not sure. Every once & a while, IH would list the decals in the kit. There might have been a bulletin from the Paint & Product committee, pertaining to the numbers listed on it. There were usually updates for the patent decals, so the ones listed may not be  the same throughout the production history of the planter or other machines.

Been preparing to paint the planter . Every time I think it ready for top coat I find some more clay and grease compounded so tightly bonded to the surface , got to wire brush out once I discover that miss,  as I prime ,I leave that area . Come back an cleaned it out and prime the area . Thunder !

pressure washer will not remove it, got to dig and scrape it off some how . Collected in places the nozzle can’t reach it. Ugh !

Completely wore out the small wire brush I did the  majority removal with.

Sherman Williams sayes 90 percent of the paint job is in the preparation! Boy they got that right!

Took the C and the painted up C221 corn planter over to the 200 Geauga County Fair Yesterday . Parked it next my Fordson F.
The 1948 Farmall C replaced the Fordson as farms tractor when the Fordson through a connecting rod . Never heard the Fordson run until January last year about seventy three years dormant.
My son Matt helped mount the C221 planter on the C . I asked for help , I could not lift the front cultivators off the C .Then the C221 is a extremely hazardous with all the pinch points that go with the lift levers. I had to say this is to much ,I need help .

I don’t know how Dad did it by himself, but he did it .

When working on a 70 year old machine ,you find issues that you know are going to a acid reflex. The frog which attachment is for fertilizer unit. Was filled with dirt and rust which was expand sheet metal side wings. I’m going use it . So I wanted to clean it paint it and seal it cause it will just happen all over again. Well they broke. Thunder what am I going to do. There aren’t any of these anywhere, anymore , viz. So I asked . We felt braze was the best repair for this cast . Why they welded these at factory was a wonder to me . Just aided in the cracks in my opinion.

show what we did to fix ours .

request ! If you have these frogs please don’t through them away, someone like me can use them .

It’s a rainy day in NEO . So I thought I would trim the IHC logo stamped into the top of the Richmond seed hoppers . They never had this new but I wanted to see if i like it. So I free hand it in white with serifs as best I could.  I think its ok

what do you think?  , an its ok to say you don’t like it . Ain’t going hurt my feelings .

Besides I’m finding that 100 out 101 people at shows will never notice it ,I did it for myself for edification and amusement.

Looks nice but is are you going to be OCD and have them exactly in the same direction when showing?

Never thought of that , laughing all the way to the field . I hope to use the corn planter for corn (sweet) once again , don’t think the little seeds  give a hoot about clocked logos  , but I know from showing things I thought were important don’t matter .

thank for the tip

Taking the Farmall C to Horse Power weekend . Took it over today . Starts tomorrow . I put the seed hopper back together with painted logos . Mounted them to C221.
I’ll counted how many people notice them.
Good Show to end summer at Lake County Farm Parks . Anything to do with horsepower .
i actually got to plow with a team of draft horses .

Got tractors

also a car and truck show , plus the farm should be fun with grandkids . They like to come to this tractor show .

I’m not sure when I can use this planter . So I took the Richmond seed hopper apart. I should have label the hopper left and right. Because one side was cracking the seed. Well one of the 3324a seed plates was in upside down. So I wished I would have taken a picture, but i didn’t. Anyway I only took one side apart at a time to clean and paint  . Left the other side as a benchmark. I painted some parts ih blue to see them better in photo.
I will find out if it’s a mistake to paint these units . I did cause they don’t make this stuff anymore , I thought painted was the best way to persevere it till I can plant.
So here some assembly photos .

I put wicking thread locker on the carriage bolt .I have a habit of leaving newly painted stuff loose. This nut is above the seed plate ,if it comes off it will drop into the seed plate and mess up a lot .

Dont get in a hurry or forget to take a lot of pictures .

I dont know if paint will mess you up or not but I suspect it could cause you issues. That stuff is all cast iron and has lasted this long . Stored inside I doubt it would ever be an issue not painted. It does look nice tho.

Put the decals on the seed hoppers yesterday , got them together so I can quit tripping over them in the garage .
Id sure like to bring the set up to Red power roundup . Or farm progress or both .

keep dreaming I say .

Maybe get some sweet corn and learn how to plant with it. Read the manual over a few times ,time to put it into action in the field to discover all I didn’t know .
