Cleaning ac condenser

Recommended Posts

Got an inefficient AC system that looks like tubes are covered with crud when inspected with a led flashlight.

What are your favorite methods and cleansers for restoring air flow and cooling surfaces to coils.

Steam would be ideal, i have had good luck with a hot water pressure washer VERY CAREFULLY from a distance with the widest pattern. Just use the heat to melt the crud and the water to rinse it away.

If it's an automotive issue you'd be amazed what will build up between the condenser and the radiator. On some vehicles you can remove the plastic and top radiator supports and tilt the radiator away from the condenser enough to expose the crud.

I've used about five different types and brands of condenser cleaner that the big box stores sale and McMaster Carr and the stuff in the spray can that foams up I put a liberal amount on one side and let it sit for however long it says on the can and then was it out with a normal water hose then do the other side and go side to side each time till I get clean water coming out

Hot soapy water and scrub with a deep bristle brush. Ammonia helps too. Then rinse with hot water.

The cleaning acid works good but can damage the materials.

If needed a plastic zip tie can be used to clean between the fins.

I avoid pressure washers. I've seen too many fins washed flat...

On a greasy machine or house ac?

Farm tractor and it doesn't really look bad until you get in there with a strong light. Then you see the tubes are not clean. You can see the back of the fins and they are free of debris,

Foaming coil cleaner works on cars and house a/c. Not sure about paint  used to use “flesh eating cleaner” but whatever you do rinse everything down and then rinse it down twice more and use gloves. Will destroy roofs and anything else in the way. Will take grease out. Some from McMaster and grainger use in well ventilated areas.

Hot water pressure washer with wide fan nozzle and pressure dialed back is by far the best. I've also adapted a brake line up to a garden hose with a 90 degree fitting to get into tight spots where accessibility is an issue.

I have never used anything other than an air compressor.

I also made a long wand from brake line ending in a 90°

I clean often.

Coil cleaner. alumabrite is what I have. i cut it with a little water in a spray bottle or pump up sprayer. I like to wet the coils down good, then squirt away. After a minute you'll see that foam push out junk you didnt even know was in there. Rinse thourally and repeat if necessary. Make sure your drains are unplugged. As far as I'm concerned it's the only way to clean a coil the right way. I've used a couple cans of house brand coil cleaner and wasnt too impressed. fyi

X2 on the air. Long wand and regular cleaning and it's not bad at all
