Oh will the neighbors be mad

Adding automation should not be very difficult for someone with your skill set. Get an automatic transfer switch. That’s what gives the run and stop signals. On old school engines auto-start is easy to add. There’s a multitude of aftermarket controllers available. The component most use for speed sensing is a mag pickup. You drill and tap a hole in the bell housing perpendicular to the flywheel right over the teeth. The rest is pretty simple wiring. I would be happy to help if you have any questions. Also there are a few other guys on this forum that have extensive knowledge on this subject.

I believe the Detroit has a mechanical linkage that you move ahead to one spot, it starts at an idle, and then push ahead to full throttle and it runs at the set rpm.  This isn’t as easy to automate, but it will be very easy to teach.

I honestly don't think mufflers help much on the 671-etc drop-troit series motors. I think it is mostly engine noise coming through the block. All of ours are loud

I have no trouble hearing when my neighbour about 1 km away starts his HD 15.  And he's a meticulous mechanic so I don't think it is internal noise!

Your EPA wouldn't like this but - a crew here had an irrigation area with restricted pumping hours.  Their solution was to do an underwater muffler.  So if you happened to have a spare pond - -

And IIRC 20KV ought to need about 40 hp.  Showing my ignorance of Detroits here but our FA 10 dozer (100 hp engine) uses about 2 (Imp) gallons an hour so your consumption ought to be less than that?

I don't mean noise like it's coming apart. I think the way they are designed all the noise is mainly emanating from the block

Should also mention that some way of muffling the intake air may be considered  if the exhaust muffler is inadequate.  53 series all have straight-lobe rotors which tend to be noisier, the noise being generated much like how a siren works.

Thank you for the replies guys

if the fuel consumption is reasonable, and everything seems to say it will be, then this generator would be worth it.  Not what I want but the price is right

I would need to install a dog house around the ole gal, and give her a little heat in the worst parts of the year, no big deal.  A big muffler and a good intake, hook up some electric louvers so she is sealed up and warm in her house until she warms up and then they open and let in the cold air as needed.  I may even run a heat exchanger from her to the boiler, because I bet she would make enough heat for my shop. That means I get 3 gallons back (the shop boiler burns 2 to 4 gallons a day in the winter, if it does not need to run it saves fuel)

Well things changed. Found a 14kw lister

a buddy was selling it, hadn’t seen him in awhile. Saw it listed and called. Better size, and more of what I wanted.

Well I was think of this today.

We didn’t get to the lister before the season ended, and my buddy left for the year, so we will be going off the beaten path in the spring to drag her out.  On top of that I am a weeee bit behind on projects and was not ready to install it yet.

On a different note, so far we have been on the little suitcase generator twice today, and 7 or 8 times this winter. And we have had quite a few short hits (less than 10 minutes).  I hope your doing well @Twolines with this weather.

Sweet britches has decided my priorities will be different this spring, cause this sucks. She has had to drag the suitcase gen set out and hook up three times to keep the pellet stove from filling the house with smoke. I did break down and buy a UPS ago keep the dang stove running for those minor outages.

so now I am trying to figure out where to order a PTO generator, if I buy it to big I will have to get a larger tractor…oh what a slippery slope

wow you guys amaze me with your calculating formulas, thermal efficiency, load, noise abatement, i bet if you faced the generator down hill the electrons flow out of it better too

u guys think way beyond my brain let alone my mathematical abilities, im the guy that hooks the generator up to the 560 pto shaft with a full tank of fuel and runs out and looks at the gauge ever couple hours to get an idea how well things are going, then i top it off and head to bed for the night like my wood stove !!!!

interesting stuff guys - never owned a detroit engine but from all the youtubes i havent found a quiet one in the 2 stroke category

Thanks for the mention. We've been fortunate so far this year with only brief outages. Its been down in the -40s for almost a week now but we've had the stove rolling so good there.

A friend of a friend died a couple years ago down the way from us and ive been offered a bunch of stuff from his estate. I will know more after break up..but one piece ill be taking is an old IH generator. They say its a 12kw and is gas but the pics they showed me, it looks like diesel. Ill take it either way. Theres also 2 IH track loaders and a dozer they want to push my way along with an ancient excavator? Not sure of the exact term but its all cable....drag line shovel? We havnt talked prices yet but sounds like they just really want the stuff off the property.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Too bad on the delay on the Lister, those have a great reputation

A rancher friend here filled the gap between 32 volt and the 240 volt SWER line with a Lister set that ran 24/7.

When the line got to him it had something like 58,000 hours on it - that is about 6.5 years worth.  I didn't hear of any rebuilds.

Later - I'll ask Jamie on what sort of maintenance they have to do on the power plants on the big ranches in the north.  The first one he worked on had a main set of 60 KVA and a back up of 40.

Seems the approach is variable - some run till it blows up, some rebuild when oil consumption gets too high.  Rebuild might be 10 - 15 years, maybe 30,000 hours.  Serviced weekly.

Newer engines more fuel efficient but DEF etc.  Older 6 cyl natural aspirated or 4 cyl turbo Hino's with Stamford alternators pushing indefinite life.

Parts for Lister diesels still look like available which was his other question.

I agree, i keep mine in the walk out basement , warm, charged, drag it out, put the lid on and plug it in.
