AngrySailor’s random machining, motors, fix it or (explitive) it thread

Local fellas barn burned with all his toys inside. I darn near cried when I seen this. Anyways. I put a few wires on the mercury Montego and she fired right up. He was real happy and planning to restore everything. That’s a 75 flh shovel there too I believe. Everything is crusty but no serious heat damage To the hard parts. Probably all salvageable

Yeah they think critters in the walls chewing on wires. Yeah he’s not happy. Of course insurance doing everything possible to not pay anything. The car runs, the bike will again too it’s not that bad below the tank. Might want to put valance springs though and surely every seal in it is toast. Especially the pushrod tubes, they’d get hot fast.

If insurance can find a way not to pay out they will, hope he had the right coverage on his policy

It’s Pretty much read to install, I can’t find my remote oil filter adapter, motor mounts, shifter, rad hoses... pissing me off. I might put a standard location filter on it today (can’t change with the header on) and get it in the truck for now. You can remove the header fairly easy so I’ll install that when I find it. MAYBE fire it up today or tomorrow. I’m back to work later this week...

Geez b’ys busy day. Tractors, electronics, big block... only got a few days left and back to work. Gonna set the engine in tomorrow and hopefully fire up. Detroitson fired right up, wheel broke had to weld that up.... busy day. Need to make a 1/8” shim between the tranny and bell housing, that double disc clutch is thicker and can’t get enough throw out bearing free play.

I liked the motor start up video . That is confidence , bottle beer in one hand and timing light in the other!

What is the path forward to the 1st burnout?

Clutch release is the issue rn. I’ve got a 3/4” clutch master and that was perfect for my last clutch with the quarter master hydraulic release bearing. This McLeod clutch needs more stroke so I need to bump up to a 7/8” at least. Might pull my free play shim tomorrow morning and make a shifter handle to get one burnout in before I go back to sea though...

Certainly sounds mean and it looks like she runs good

How did these hold up?

They’re 20 years old and hard as hockey pucks! ZERO traction. Breathe on the throttle in third gear they’re spinning, don’t leave any marks, maybe some rubber dust! The brakes are fugged from sitting, needs front flex lines, maybe calipers. Smashed them loose enough for a drive but I only got back brakes rn. Clutch isn’t perfect with the pedal travel and free play but I got it working with what I had. Need to order a larger bore clutch master cylinder. She pulls right up to the rev limit in the blink of an eye, had a 6800 chip in it.  Gotta get the feel of things again as it’s been a while and the clutch is totally different than I’m used to. It’s actually way mellower and longer pedal travel. I don’t like that, it needs to happen in less pedal travel. Sure felt good to drive that truck again after 18 years in storage though! Cold snacks and wings now. Went to the local legion, special night out for me, I never go out for cold snacks.

Kind of looks like a dominator 🙄

Good deal, brings back lots of great memories, incentive for this stretch out, sounded like she was flaring at will but stays tracking pretty straight
