Measuring at the moment. Now that the pistons are milled to zero deck the piston rocks 0.012” below the deck and 0.012” above the deck.  At zero deck quench will be 0.39” with the fel-pro 1027 gaskets. Probably use some just to check piston to valve quick as I don’t want to remove valve springs to put test springs on and these big blocks have lots of room at this cam and piston dome level. It’s also a bit of a known combination with this cam and head. Theres likely over 1/4” piston to valve or more but a quick check never hurts.

What you don’t measure you don’t control , use to get me every time.

Things are real tight on the dome side of the slug. These heads were originally 119cc or maybe even 123cc? Not sure as I haven’t played much with GM heads on these types of builds but they’ve been milled to 110cc... that’s why the head is encroaching on the cylinder on the outboard sides. You can see where I’ve scribed it to match the gasket, time to “make room”. Of course they’re assembled and my valve spring compressor won’t like these springs... bag and tag!

0.030” gap in the rod cap with the piston touching the head and no head gasket. That’s 0.070” clearance when assembled before the piston makes an interference contact with the head. Now that measurement is with the piston rocked in the bore on its piston to wall clearance so theoretical quench is still 0.040” (the thickness of the head gasket) as the flat surface of the piston is zero deck, this just tells me the domes won’t hit anywhere in the chamber first. Think we got a winner now.

Just looked at an old CAT d315? Generator from the 1940’s. Didn’t get any pics and was dark asf in there anyways but they’re using it to power an old saw mill. Would run for 15 mins then stop was the call. It was tripping on over temp (it’s mechanical thermostat spool controlling engine oil pressure to actuate the crap down on these old cats). Quick service call to tell the fella “put a new thermostat in it”.

This is where the magic happens, good idea to check the bottom side, beats playing with clay

Finally got back to the big block. Not worth a pic cuz looks the same as before but one piston and rod installed with rings gapped and rod torqued. Them Spiro-locks are a biatch when you haven’t done them in a while. Took near half an hour for the first two then I got the system down and had the other pair in quick. Long day, closing the shop up and heading to trevers for a cold snack then bed, start fresh tomorrow and get the short block all together now that quench is sorted I’m home free.

That’s better... the piston clears with no head gasket so there’s at least 0.040” everywhere...

Those are just scrap plugs just to plug the hole and keep the debris out of the bag and the rest of the head. I don’t worry about clocking plugs really. In EXTREME cases of close squeeze engines it is necessary or the plug wilL hit the piston. Not the case here

Pulled the oil pump apart for cleaning/inspection. Drilled the relief spring retaining pin out to 5/32 and installed a new roll pin as the old one wasn’t right tight fit. You can stake them in but didn’t feel comfortable it wouldn’t move. Pump and pickup installed (remembered the pump drive shaft), bump stick next... can’t find one of two cam thrust buttons I have in this shop... fug...

They had cold snacks so was ok in my books...

Found the other ISKY sticker, keep it next to my Merlin V12 starting magneto. You know,  just in case I feel like taking my spitfire for a spin.

It’s got a place on the shelf! Knew it was a keeper but Über rare?

Got the cam degree’d 106.5 intake center line. Time to button up the bottom end. Finally found the cam thrust button also. Checked the timing tab pointer and she’s bang on TDC now.

helped pops stand up the first of his new man cave today as well.

looks like back to the ship Saturday, was supposed to get a transport truck load of forklifts Friday but it’s been delayed till Monday. Looks like pops will be unloading...
