SOB! My friend called me said one of his numpties put DEF in the diesel tank of his new duramax. Asked if I’d fix it, of course I said NO!  Well lookie what just got dropped off in front of my shop 🤬

Working on the 496 lifter bores. Using a custom reamer I had ground to open them to 0.903” then finish hone to 0.9055”. There’s a non cutting pilot that guides in the existing bore snug to keep things straight. This is the one with the BIG bump stick and Merlin aluminium heads. Made just shy of 800hp on the dyno. 796 I think,  couldn’t quite push it over 800. This cam is a little more lift and duration and she’s getting the Hilborn injection so she should be 800+ now. Oh I bumped the compression from 10.5;1 to 11:1 too. Big big big block!

Looks like MT3, probably used for boring holes for tapered dowel pins and sometimes for aligning mismatched holes in two plates.
nice box

Think she’s ready to go to the shop. Still have to change rod bolts in one set, make sure I’ve got everything that needs to go packed up and good to go. I told buddy not to bring his truck here so hope he doesn’t complain if it got sand on it...

Did you weld on the pan sump extension? FYI look for a 427 gravel truck pan and pump pickup, factory parts

That’s a (fairly cheap) moroso pan, 9” deep and most importantly it has the bumps to clear the rod bolts with the 4.250” stroke and cap screw rods. I’ve also added some more baffling inside to keep the oil from climbing the back of the pan. She’s some dirty inside from years of sitting around though...

Huh forgot about this. This starter boss has been busted ever since I got this block. The helicoil is in pretty deep and it’s 7/16NC. I had a special stud made for there that stepped to 3/8”. It goes in pretty deep and never gave me an issue. I am tempted to grind away the broken part so it doesn’t propagate deeper...

Guess I’m committed now, going to counter bore the crack away and machine up a stepped, threaded insert to repair this and bring it back to 3/8”NC as it should be.

They installed the sign this morning. Booked the road closed from 6am to midnight. They left the yard where we built it at 6:30 and the road was open by 9am. Fit like a glove.

Hope this works... I’m able to just clean the old threads out at 9/16-18 tap drill size. I’d like to use coarse threads but there is a fair depth of thread going to be in there when I’m done. It also will not be removed, the repair sleeve will be threaded in once then the starter bolt will thread into that. I also carried that bore down through the starter boss with the plan to cross drill 1/4” shoulder bolt through there to secure it... I’m about half inch deep on the counterbore now and I think I’ve gotten rid of all the crack.

Quick and dirty magnaflux test, speaker magnet and two punches worked surprisingly well. Probably be even better with finer iron dust.

Forgot that through bolt. Wish I had some grade 8 Allen heads I’d have counter bores it in some. Whatever, it’s done.

Kinda surprised myself... ST isn’t here, Ma and pops are 1200 miles away at the old homestead picking up a load of moving stuff and that non tractor 8n we bought. I’m totally UNSUPERVISED... got the block done, fed their cat and cleaned the litter box even... we must have switched time lines... finally drive under that sign even though I know who built it and how many cold snacks he had...

How many teeth had to be pulled to get that sign under those 3 phase lines??  And, no, I am NOT willing to be the crane operator there.

A few... the lines were raised the photo probably doesn’t do it justice but there was some permit Bish/safety sloot raised **** over things. Guess it went up real easy, no issues.

Very neat looking reason to be late!!

It was! Nice fella too. Got his card and going to make arrangements to meet him next time when I pick up the 496. Should be able to bring pops along then.
