AngrySailor
Yeah I’m alive. Nm going on. Been a busy few days of boring operations. Heading to Detroit now, should be heading home for vacation after this trip. Hopefully all goes well and be home first few days of may. Then it’s big (little) big block build and flat head time.

AngrySailor
Putting pops to work back at my shop. He’s doing some cleaning and organizing getting ready for big block assembly. Found the new cam and lifters for the 496 build. Multiply the lobe lift by 1.75 for valve lift. She gets them a fair ways off the seats! The block is being dropped off for machining when I pick up the 454 which should be ready to assemble. Hoping to have it installed and driving in the square body before my vacation is up... fingers crossed. Looks like I’m signing off the ship hopefully Sunday. I’ll probably spend two days with ST as I’m disembarking in the welland canal, right near her place. I also bought a sunnen rod hone and a cabinet full of mandrels located near there also. It’s from a friend of mine who’s downsizing shop and semi retiring. Think I made out good for the $1600 he wanted for it... gotta help him pump the honing oil into buckets and clean it up as pops is picking it up first week of may. Might be able to size my own rods and pin bores properly now. Hope there’s a 0.990” mandrel in the selection! Ayy

AngrySailor
Came across some pics of the square body I don’t think I posted before. Found these with the old appraisal stuff I just sent off to Hagerty. Insurance will be in effect may 15th so I’m good to go if I get her together. Everything will be the same except for the aluminum heads. The ‘54 has 990 iron rec ports going on it.
AngrySailor
Sweet... we had a boat and fire drill scheduled for right now, it’s canceled. We’re steaming full away, it’s raining and a bit rough on Lake Erie. I don’t really want to be on deck in fireman’s gear if nothing actually on fire...

Your going over 7000 on the street , The ‘54 build has a bit smaller solid roller in it, 262@0.050” 0.650” lift. It will turn 7000+ and live but probably make good power to 6800. That Crower grind is for the 496 and when she was in the square body I had a 7600 limit chip on it. Hit that a few times! Mostly if you miss a shift or something breaks it’s there to save your butt. a lot of people don’t realize how snappy these big blocks get when you beef them up and lighten the rotating mass. I had a tilton clutch on the 496 and it would spike 7000 and back to idle in the blink of an eye with just a quick stab at the throttle. One missed shift and without a limiter you’ve ventilated rods at +10krpm before you could even think to lift.

I’m glad to hear , I ve seen oil pressure drop off on the dyno 7000+ plus ,forgot which engine it was . To me my rev limit is 3400 ahah , good for the shoreway

There’s also a 40psi triggered giant red warning light that will give you a sun tan at 39psi. Rule of thumb is 10psi per 1k rpm to be safe. It’s murder on the (required to use because billet steel cam) bronze distributor gear though. They’re a change every season item. Summer cold starts with 20w50 oil will peg a 100psi gauge until the oil warms up.

You know as fun as the 4spd is I have tossed around the idea of putting a TH400 in... the 496 makes over 600ft/lbs from 2800rpm up so don’t need too crazy of a stall converter, manual valve body with a trans brake... could be fun. Toss in a line lock for epic burnouts... then I priced tires in case I have to replace them... that would be a pretty pricey smoke show!
jeeper61
What's that square body got for rear suspension?
AngrySailor
40 minutes ago, jeeper61 said: What's that square body got for rear suspension? She’s a 9” Ford on a reduced stack of leafs with some funky homemade traction bars. I have to mess with the traction bars a bit to let her squat a bit more. She works pretty good, no wheel hop but the traction bars stiffened the springs more than I wanted by means of where they clamp to the springs. They eliminate too much of the working area of the spring. I plan to correct that. I considered going right wild 20 years ago with mustang II front end and a 4 link but then I’d be building a tube chassis and and and it’s not a street truck anymore. It weighs ~4000lbs and ran a 12.04@136mph with an atrocious 60’ of over 2 seconds. I drove it to and from the track and beat a Dodge Viper. The trac bar mod will help the 60’ time for sure but it’s not a bad driver with the leafs. So they’re finally getting around to installing that sign. It’s being erected next Saturday. I should even be home to watch the show... they loaded it on a trailer today.
