@Sledgehammer Very nice hatchet..   Punched and drifted eye I'd guess?

Here is me at a demo few years ago.  I was so young there..  LOL.. 

I'm a trade smith vs artist..  Rather make a digging shovel vs a gate..  Something used that becomes invisible in use.

I'm glad you saved yours and made out on a good deal.   Was the injection pump bad on yours?  I'd love if you could mention any parts or filters you replaced. 

Did you match up the pump numbers or same motor?  D282?

On forum ediguette am I doing all right?   Some forums don't like quoting, some do..  Some like photos, some don't.. 

The trailer is awesome.. This is version 1.5..   The trailer started as a single axle SAAB car mover I built in 87.. As SAAB cars got bigger so did the trailer.. 

The next version will have a gantry that is height adjustable and about 3 ft longer..   It works super slick..  No problem unloading the backhoe in the least.

Yes, punched and drifted eye.  Mild steel with forge welded bit. I agree. I like useful things much more than ornate. I would rather make a tool or sharp object than something to look at. Hammers for example are a lot of fun (although time consuming) and can be used afterwards. I don’t have a press or power hammer so it takes me longer than some. Probably the most rewarding thing I’ve made as far as usefulness. Face came out around 55 Rockwell, 1045 steel

Is Seth involved with the SAAB Rally scene?  Years back I instigated a Gripper Diff buy with the company in the UK..  Imported like 20 units.. 

On a different note I took out the tachometer to make sure it worked as there was no cable and it does..  I bought a cable last week so will get that installed.. 

Any of you guys recommend a certain filter housing and filter..  the unit on 3800 was extremely cross threaded..  I was like what in sam hill is this buggery.. 

I dented the cannister trying to get it off..  I will weld a large nut on the bottom tomorrow and see If i can get it apart that way.. 

But ideally I think I'd be better off replacing it..  So recommendations needed..   Thanks

If I were you I would go on the wix dimensional filter site I posted earlier, find a spin on filter that meets your requirements and then look at their filter bases and pick one that fits. The nice thing about Wix is that Napa sells their filters. Just drop the first number and use the last four as the Napa number.

Yes I agree. Wix has a great site. I only got one filter that they say would fit a machine and it didn't.Just after that I buy that filter from a New Holland dealer.

Ok banner day today as for completion of work.  

Got the exhaust expanded and in correct position. 

Drained the transmission and pulled the oil screen, and inspected the inside for metal chips with a magnet.. No chips, little fuzz and some grunge. 

Turns out the transmission filter is not cross threaded.. It's just the way it was made..   To get the top and cannister separated I welded on a 1.125 nut onto the bottom. 

It still would not budge so put a little heat on it.. This expanded the alum housing and it spun some..  Turns out there was some dirt and galvanic corrosion..  I clean everything up and put it back together..  No chips or fuzz in the filter cannister..  

Also got the tags clean up enough to read them..  Well 2 of them.. 

Someone went at the front axle tag with a sand blaster or something.

thanks.. What a relief on both the transmission and the filter coming apart and the no metal in the sump. 

I was surprised there is no magnet in the sump to catch the little fuzzy's..    I might put in a magnetic drain plug..

Those little super magnets are great for that too.  Easy to make magnetic plugs with just by drilling the right size blind hole in the end of the plug.  You can also just slap them on the side of the sump or filter housing as well.  Here is the magnetic plug out of my AC HD9 trans, it's a monster!

Now that is a sump magnet one can appreciate..   

I'd love to find something like in a 3/4" pipe..   :)   

I've been looking and all the plugs out there for the 3/4" size are tiny..   

I'm going to have to make something or will have to install a 3/4" SAAB transmission drain plug.. They were magnetic from the early 60's..

Is there a drain on the back of the converter? 

What is the correct way to exchange/flush fluids on these transmissions?

So before I filled the transmission with oil I threw in a strong magnet into the bottom of the case.   I did not bother to flush the converter..  No feedback on my question so ended up letting it go as is.. 

Filer was clean, sump was clean..  :) 

On the tail of that. I pulled the grill and straightened it out..  Then for the final top off I put a little bling on it..

After the grill last night I pulled the valve cover off and cleaned it.. 

Today I  did a bunch of reading and ended up coming back onto the Red site and looking for which end of the motor is number 1 cylinder..  

I've never worked on a tractor diesel  so had to see where things are..   Cylinder 1 is closest to the fan belt and water pump end.    

On front of the timing cover there is a pointer cast into it and on the front inner balancer/pulley there is a scale with Degrees with a prominent Dot  (.) for TDC..  

So after reading the procedure in the engine manual D282 I tackled the job..  Because of the oil cooler lines were was no way to get a socket in and grab the front crank nut.. 

So instead there are holes for bolts tapped into the front harmonic balancer..  I used 6 bolts and a long bar to spin the motor around and once I figured out that for each revolution it will be either at cylinder 1 or cylinder 6..   (checking the rockers for open arms (space)and compression stroke).. 

I adjusted 1,2,3,5,7 and 9..  to 0.30    then with TDC on cylinder 6 I adjusted 4, 6,8,10,11,12 also to 0.30     

In the D282 manual I have it called for 0.27"  but figured there were 2 numbers 0.27 and 0.30..  

When I checked the original clearance it was extremely loose..  0.60-0.75" ..  

There was no valve recession into the head so that was good to see..   

I can not believe there is no groove or oring type gasket for the valve cover..  Just a flat gasket.  

What do you guys use on these gaskets to help seal them and hold them in position?  Also what torque value?

I can't believe what good shape yours looks to be in. Mine isn't exactly the right color so it looks even worse and has spent its whole life outside.  I'll get some pics of mine shortly, just finished up planting tonight.

how did you check valve recession?   with head on...........

they are cold blood until hot

smoke could be slow valve action ,but ....lately poor repair parts to the injectors....std tired pump,with few parts available from Italy

I've seen valve recession into heads on Gasoline car engines..  I assumed it is the same type of thing.. 

You will find the clearances really tight between valve stem and rocker..   Its more assumption based on a simple observation..   All the valve and spring assemblies where the same height..  Valve recession again, would show more height at the spring retainer..  Again based on visual vs taking the head off to see..   

Is it the ultimate way to check.. Certainly not, but if I got in there and all the valves were loose but 1 with no clearance then it would need further investigation.. 

I'm not an IH nor diesel expert..    I can only apply information I have from previous work,  information I read in manuals or information you find people here offer.. 

No feedback  or instructions from the forum, it then becomes  previous work and manuals..   

The collective here will have more information from experience which can be more beneficial as the "Been there, done that, and this is the right way".  Vs manuals.. 

Thanks for the info.      I have no history on the injectors.. The original red paint looks fairly new but it's been painted over several times..  Can see a few coats of yellow. 

My biggest concern is the low idle.  If I let off the throttle it will die..

Can't wait to see it..  I'm not a flashy person and I have never owned a new car or truck or anything huge.. I've owned a few new Anvils but that's about it on the new scale.. 

Few things are required in anything motorized..    

Has to start, has to run and it has to stop..     Looks while nice usually falls to the wayside.. I'm not a great painter..   The prep to do a nice job is more than I can apply to it. 

I did rebuild an Old Oster pipe threader though..  She needed major TLC..  Maybe one of the nicest jobs I've done.

You can use the Right Stuff by Permatex for the valve cover, nice work and this thread has lots of info, these models are usually a black hole for info

I'm not quite sure why it is, but I usually end up getting things that are blackhole information wise. 

 

I suppose I'm lucky that way
